"Go governance, go early"

"Go governance, go early" remains the rallying cry of savvy enterprise and solution architects who are chartered with the setting the scope and direction of their enterprise's data integration programs -- even more so now with the cresting requirement for "big data" integration. Understanding the scope, diversity and integration challenges associated with the governance of big data is tremendously challenging.
Sunil Soares' latest book represents a Rosetta Stone for IT professionals to map their portfolio of traditional IT experiences (master data management, data governance, et al) to the newest data technology trends of "big data" and "big data analytics". Specifically, among other benefits, it provides a much appreciated reference architecture for big data as well as case studies illustrating the business outcomes from big data analytics.
Clearly, in our practice experience, big data requires both master data management (MDM) and data governance to be effective and sustainable. Through 2013-14, big data will repatriate itself into the MDM fabric as yet another source. Specifically, big data applications need to be MDM-aware and MDM must also be able to store preferences for each big data source. Moreover, big data analytics need to understand the master view of customers and products to be effective. Must have for Data Governance Folks !!

I absolutely loved this book. The book is really structured around the principles that one needs to govern big data. Once author establishes the framework he gets into the best practices of each discipline in the framework. It does not talk about how to implement big data governance but I guess that should come if you have already data governance running. If you are in the data governance then this is a must read.

In the world of Big Data, data governance principles and policies are usually sacrificed in early pilots in the name of performance and time to value. As Hadoop and other Big Data technologies are put into production use and opened up to a broader audience, these systems have to be brought into compliance with standard governance policies. However, putting governance aside till then is a mistake. As with most things, forethought and prevention can save a lot of effort down the road.
