THE indispensable book on silent comedy

This book is not only the single best volume ever written about silent film comedy, but the best about silent film, period. Only Kevin Brownlow's The Parade's Gone By even comes close. There are chapters on the mechanics and aesthetics of silent film that should be read by everyone with an interest in the form. In addition, his chains of reasoning and perceptions are put forth with an aptness and lucidity that conceals the depth of the intellectual analysis. The elegantly straightforward prose makes this book a joy to read from start to finish. Further, in addition to covering the film work of the "big four" (Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, and Langdon) Kerr also sheds welcome light on lesser-known and even forgotten figures, such as the "unexpected" Raymond Giffith. Finally, this is a book that was well-produced on every level, right down to the layout, chapter headings, and fonts. Numerous film stills of every size (inluding some generous two-page spreads) make it a feast for the eyes as well as the mind, cogently and often playfully setting off the text. The original hardback edition published by Knopf was meant as a sort of intelligent coffee-table book (most assuredly NOT an oxymoron in this case), and the present oversized-paperback edition provided by the good folks at Da Capo should be seen in the same light. Both a celebration of silent comedy and a superb investigation of the form. Also a book that you can dip into again and again over the years with undiminished pleasure and come away with reinvigorated enthusiasm for the subject. If you don't have it, get it.

What Kerr has essentially revealed in this book is the very pulse by which the silent comedic form remaines timeless. He manages to write his book with such a love, yet such an intellectual understanding, that much like the art form he analyzes, it is a book devoid of snootiness or cynicsm. The book has many stengths, but carries such weight because it isn't only pre-occupied with Keaton and Chaplin. The chapters on Harold Lloyd -- who remains understudied -- are very insightful, yet objective. And while other silent comedians aren't given quite space that the major four American comedians are (Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Langdon), a respectable analysis of Arbuckle, Sennett, Linder, Laurel and Hardy, and many more are presented. Valuable perspectives on "non-comedic" actors like Fairbanks, Pickford, and Gish are also hearty reading.
Kerr also give great insight into aesthetic issues, such as music composition and presentation, varying artists' cutting techniques, the roles of women in selected films, the alternate use of frame rates, and much, much, more. What makes the book so refreshing to read is how very much Kerr loves his subject, not necassarilly his subjects. Most books about the silent comedians -- Keaton and Chaplin in particular -- cannot help but devote numerous pages and even chapters to the filmmaker's vices (i.e. Chaplin's womanizing, Keaton's alcoholism). Kerr mentions such subjects when pertinent, but they do not become the book's thrust, nor are such issues presented to undercut the artist or his work in any way. Flawed men these clowns were, but their work remains relatively perfect.

This time around, Vernon uses black, white, green, and red in the comic-like panels and illustrations that accompany the prose text. The book is just spooky enough for young readers who don’t want to get too scared, and it features the return of the monster potato salad. Grades 3-5. --Kat Kan

Great Comic Novel Book

This book is meant for kids a little bit younger than me, but it was still a fun read. I was able to read it quickly and it was entertaining the whole way through. I liked the format of mixing in regular novel writing along with some comic type pages mixed in. The illustrations are cute and add something interesting to the book, especially for those that don't like to read so much. I didn't know what two-color illustrations were when starting this book, but it's what the artist used through out and it was all that was needed for the pictures. (FYI Red and green were the only colors used, even though there are black & white photos as well...those don't count as colors since it's pen and the white space of the page.)

This is book 3 of the series and I haven't read book 1 or 2 (Dragonbreath and Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs), but it didn't seem to be a problem as the story stood well on it's own. They do mention some of their previous adventures within the story, but it adds to it instead of taking away. I'd recommend this book for the pre-teen kids out there.

"Dragonbreath Rocks!", said the 8 yr old boy

Our 8 yr old son LOVED the Dragon Breath series because they make him "Laugh his head off!". He has read every book in the series, a few of them in a day. When asked why he likes these books he said "Because they have good characters, are funny, adventurous, and the story lines are crazy - crazy AWESOME!". All of theses things make this book and the others in the series incredibly interesting to a kiddo who enjoys funny adventures.

As a parent I appreciate that they are funny without being totally stupid and that they are easy to read without being "dumbed down". I would say the reading level is higher than Big Nate but not as high as say Harry Potter. These are great transition books for readers who need a bit more of a challenge. However they are also great for more advanced readers who just want to read a great story about an amazing adventure.

Overall a great series and I would highly recommend for the 8-9 yr old set.

My Favourite Dragonbreath Book Yet!

Reason for Reading: Next in the series. Actually I was sitting down to read #4, when it dawned on me that I hadn't read #3! Somehow I'd missed it amongst all the books, so getting my priorities in order I'm reading #3, then #4!

Well, the storyline for this book is just plain silliness, but I have to say it is my favourite one so far! Wendell always brings his own lunch to school, but Danny notices that the hot dogs in today's cafeteria lunch are an incredibly bright red colour. He passes it to Wendell for him to see and the hot dog bites him! Needless to say Danny passes on hot dogs that day. A few days later Wendell shows Danny that he has hair growing on his back and they figure it is from the hot dog bite. It is really itchy and as they look around, about half the school student body and staff are itching like crazy. They set off to find out what was in those wiener's and find a package in the cafeteria. They are not regular wieners but "were-wieners" that have gone feral! It's up to Danny and Wendell to kill the Alpha-wurst, thus saving them all from lycanthropy.

A totally out there plot that is absolutely hilarious! One of the fun things is that since Wendell has been bit, every now and then he goes under the spell of the call of the moon and tries to bite Danny. This total role reversal of their characters is a great laugh and the humour in the book abounds as well as being carefully timed within the graphic panels. As usual this book is part text and part graphic panels, usually called a hybrid. What more can I say? Danny Dragonbreath fans are going to love this addition to the series and it will have them clamouring for more. Thankfully, there is book #4 to look forward to, Lair of the Bat Monster!

This book really does the job!

When i first read the reviews for this book i was a bit skeptical, but it turns out the reviews were right. Besides a few incorrect questions and answers this book served its purpose well. I took a week off to study almost the entire book along with using the cd to review before my registry and i passed with an 86. I won't say this book will get you an A on the registry but if you go through each section and take the quizzes on the cd and the mock test on the cd it really helps.The explanations in the back of the book are awesome and they really helped me realize what my weaker areas were, helped me see why the answer i picked was wrong so as not to make the mistake again, and helped to further strengthen the reasoning that allowed me to answer some questions correctly. This book was great and im now lending it to a friend :)

97 on the exam......

I recently moved to the US and had to take my Registry exam (I haven't worked as an X-Ray tech since 1996 and my DCR exam was back in 1984!). I used this book along with Moseby's Comprehensive Review to prepare. As most of the subject matter is different to the stuff I learnt (especially radiation protection and digital imaging) and uses other parameters/centering points/terminology.I found these two books the ONLY thing I needed: as the title says, I just got 97 on the registry exam!

Works for some, not for me

I got this book because EVERYONE was saying how good it was. No. It made me feel stupid when I received nothing below an A on 95% of all my tests my 2 years in rad school. It goes SO over the top and quizzes you on things and you know you wont be seeing on the registry. If you want a good book that will be a kick butt review for the registry then get the purple Mosbys book. Now THAT book helped me out a lot.
