In 1978 New Yorker magazine staff writer John McPhee set out making notes for an ambitious project: a geological history of North America, centered, for the sake of convenience, on the 40th parallel, a history that encompasses billions of years. In 1981 he published the first of the four books that would come from his research: Basin and Range, a study of the mountainous lands between the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas. Two years later came In Suspect Terrain, a grand overview of the Appalachian mountain system. In 1986 McPhee released Rising from the Plains, a history of the Rocky Mountains set largely in Wyoming. And in 1993 came Assembling California, a survey of the area geologists find to be a laboratory of volcanic and tectonic processes, a place where geology can be watched in the making. Annals of the Former World gathers these four volumes, which McPhee always conceived of as a whole, to make that epic of the Earth's formation; to it he adds a fifth book, Crossing the Craton, which introduces the continent's ancient core, underlying what is now Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.

McPhee's great virtue as a journalist covering the sciences--and any other of the countless subjects he has taken on, for that matter--is his ability to distill and explain complex matters: here, for example, the processes of mineral deposition or of plate tectonics. He does so by allowing geologists to speak for themselves and an entertaining lot they are, those sometimes odd men and women who puzzle out the landscape for clues to its most ancient past. A feast for all John McPhee fans, this major book incorporates some of the author's best work on geology into a comprehensive tour de force. Those familiar with McPhee's writing on the subject of geology will know that his narrative includes not only scientific theory but also portraitures of his geologic guides. While the majority of this material has appeared in the New Yorker and in books such as Basin and Range, In Suspect Terrain and Rising from the Plains, the collection, which includes 20,000 new words, is much more than a recycling of past writing. As McPhee says, "The text has been meshed, melded, revised, in some places cut, and everywhere studied for repetition." McPhee's many fans won't be disappointed with the high-quality descriptive portraits of geologists, their work and theories. Since the writing follows McPhee's previous works and not any set geography or geologic logic, the author has provided what he calls a "Narrative Table of Contents," which not only describes each section in turn but the theories discussed in it. In this near flawless compilation of ambitious and expansive scope, McPhee's personalized style remains consistent and triumphant: "Ebbets Field, where they buried the old Brooklyn Dodgers, was also on the terminal moraine. Geology for the Intelligent Layperson

Page-turning suspense, profound human interest, a remarkable narrative arc, and shocking violence. Subject: geology. I'm not kidding.

I am a complete newbie to geology. But even if, like me, you don't know schist about the subject, you will enjoy this wonderful book. Other reviewers here have pointed out some outdated information or subjective emphases. Okay, but he's writing a narrative, not a textbook.

Before charging off on this book -- which, BTW, is great value for money -- be sure you're familiar with Kindle's look-up feature. I used it literally dozens of times to get definitions of unfamiliar terms. What you get out of this book depends on the effort you put into it.

One of the great books of my life

I think Moby Dick is my favorite book of all time, at age 65.

But I tell you, if you have any interest in what came before us, before the whale, before TIME, what will exist after humans and whales are gone from this earth, this is the only book for you.

If you love America, as I do, if you love LIFE, if you love things bigger than yourself, unimaginable spans of time, then this is THE book for you. Take a trip across this gorgeous country with a man who will open your eyes to where it came from. Luxuriate in the vocabularies of geologists; lose yourself in deep time; realize how insignificant we are in the BIG scheme of things; enjoy a master at the heights of his narrative power.

In short, read or listen to this book. You will never forget it; it will haunt you until you read it again. And again, as I'm in my third unforgettable journey from the Precambrian to the anthropocene, beer cans and conodants and geologists included.

This Book Rocks

Some sections are difficult to follow, but overall it is an excellent book about the geology of the United States. Taking a road trip on route 80 from NJ to San Francisco McPhee delves into the geology of the U.S. He uses several jumping points to explain the science behind geology. On the surface the topic may sound boring, but McPhee makes it engaging with beautiful sentences and a unique ability to explain the science. He also provides the personal background of geologists he travelled with to prepare this book while discussing geology covering millions and billions of years. The best chapters for me is Book 3 where McPhee very subtly transitions from a discussion of Wyoming settlers to the current geologist he is traveling with while reviewing the geology. Book 4 is fascinating just because of the complexities of California tectonic plates and how well he explains the shifting of plate that is taking place. This is an excellent book for the non-scientist and to gain an understanding of geology, questions within the field, and difference of opinion within the discipline.

About the Authors:
Julia Maria Aguirre is assistant professor of education at the University of Washington Tacoma. Her work focuses on mathematics teaching and learning, teacher education, and culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy, with a primary goal of strengthening access and advancement in mathematics education for historically marginalized youth. The National Science Foundation, Carnegie Foundation, and Spencer Foundation have funded her work.

Karen Mayfield-Ingram is associate director for the EQUALS programs at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work focuses on mathematics and equity professional development, teacher leadership, and parent involvement. She is the author of The Journey--Through Middle School Math (EQUALS, 2005) and co-editor of the EQUALS Middle School Investigations series.

Danny Bernard Martin is professor of education and mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on understanding the salience of race and identity in black children s mathematical experiences. He is the author of Mathematics Success and Failure among African Youth (Erlbaum, 2000), editor of Mathematics Teaching, Learning, and Liberation in the Lives of Black Children (Routledge, 2009), and co-editor of The Brilliance of Black Children in Mathematics: Beyond the Numbers and Toward New Discourse (Information Age, 2013).

Superb book!

The immune system is a favorite topic of mine. Almost everything which happens to our bodies involves the immune system. So I was very interested in a book which is on a very professional level with current information and excellent writing style. Also I feel that educational graphics are especially important to drive home the information. This book passed all my criteria with flying colors. I really enjoyed studying it and have now read it twice (there's way too much information there to absorb on just one reading!). Almost every process in the human body involves the immune system and learning to minimize inflammation is a huge leg up on feeling good! Everything from sore muscles and joints, strep throat, healing, migraine, every disease known to man, sunburn, and on and on involve inflammation. Learning the mechanisms of inflammation and immunity and how to quiet inflammation and bolster immunity REALLY adds to ones health. I highly recommend this superb book as a way to learn how to baby ones body!

Parham does not disappoint

This is a very good textbook. The publisher, Garland sciences, is one that I trust because they have always done a very good job with their science textbooks (check out Molecular Biology of the Cell, The Biology of Cancer, and others). Continuing along this trend, Peter Parham's book does not disappoint. The figures are cartoonish in most instances of course, much like the ones in MBOC and other Garland books, but they have to be that way and it does help very much with understanding; this is mixed appropriately with real histological cross sections and figures from the clinical setting to give a more realistic idea of what things look like. To a scientist who does/participates in research with a partial or minor immunological context, or needs to learn selected topics in immunology for future research, this text is the perfect companion. For a seasoned immunologist who does pure research in the field, a better choice would probably be the more detailed and in-depth Immunobiology by Janeway, from which Parham's text is adapted if I'm not mistaken.

I loved this book! I am so sad that I only rented it for school. I have learned so much about the Immune system. Usually I find text books to be boring and very hard on the eyes. I don't even like the cover of the book but the inside is well done. :)

It is a good book

I purchased this book in 1995 when I was migrating from C to C++. Stepped through the code in the debugger, and put it aside, as it was for DOS, and I wanted to have a real Window, not DOS screen. Later, with Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows" help, I ported 3D engine DOS code to Windows31 and it worked, but I have to adapt it to the Windows events/kbd/mouse processing. Now in 6 years I recompiled the Windows 31 version on Windows 2000 Advanced Server in VS.NET Beta1 - it compiles and runs(!). I am learning C# these days, and will try to re-write Brian's engine in C#. My point is that the ideas of 3D engine experssed in this book are fundamental, as they are absorbed from the knowledge of many talented people named in the book. The bulk of engine design and the code is solid, it just takes time and patience to gain necessary experience to understand the engine, adopt it to the event-driven model, and move it to the platform of your choice. Overall book is worth the money spent for those who want to learn the core of 3D programming.

Great but don't expect to create unreal engine..

I bought this book many years ago because a friend of mine was going to buy it and asked if he should order one for me too. Yeah sure, why not. At that point even 2D game programming was a challenge for me, so I never read the book.

Now about 5 years later, and after reading "3D Math Primer for graphics and game Development", I wanted to apply some of my new knowledge, to show a simple filled cube on screen.

I started reading the book. Brian Hook at the time had a 486 and the OS was dos. The book does not explain OpenGL or Direct3D. It is completely software 3D. I like this fact. I don't expect to use the result for anyting other than knowledge. I want to know how 3D works under the hood, before I try OpenGL or Direct3D.

The examples are very easy to follow. I have now achieved to show a spinning cube on the screen which was my goal and I'm looking forward to read on and apply texture mapping.

Conclusion:

Great book if you know matrices and vectors but have no clue about how to apply it to programming.

Great if you only expect the book to help you with the first few steps into 3D programming. Don't expect to create Unreal engine or something like that.

I give it 3 stars. Maybe it deserves more but still, it IS dated and I'm taking this into consideration as well.

Not too bad...

I don't know why some of these other losers are so upset that the book didn't show them how to write a game. If they'd bothered to read the title, they'd know that it never claimed it would do that. Instead it claims that it will teach them to build a 3d Gaming ENGINE!!! An Engine, NOT A GAME!!!
When viewed from the perspective of teaching you how to build an ENGINE, it succeeds quite well. I liked the fact that he explained why he used some features of the C++ language but not others. His explanation of fixed point arithmetic in particular was enlightening, as some of the implications of its use aren't immediately apparent.
All in all, I thought it was an informative book.

Succinct (thank god)

I review many books in hopes of finding a useful one for a real world classroom and I am so grateful to have found this book. Few people can appreciate how difficult it is to write succinctly (she said as she rambled on and on during the Amazon review...) but this author must have mercilessly edited herself. The material is distilled to exactly what and why a scientist needs to know. No puffery, just useful facts, great stories, and solid footnotes. Not a sexy cover, but the content is pure gold. It was a joy to read. The tempo engages the reader like few books do. I checked it out at the library first and was so impressed that I didn't mind parting with $50 to own a copy.

He commented on Song of Solomon and Obadiah in the Evangelical Commentary on the Bible, compiled Baker's Handbook of Bible Lists, and coauthored A Survey of the Old Testament. Dr. Hill's book presents an overview of expressions of and teaching on worship in the Old Testament. Chapter one gives some practical explanations about Hebrew words translated as the English word worship. Elements of worship addressed in following chapters include: Worship as lifestyle (personal Piety), The development of worship from the patriarchs to the prophets, The holism of the Hebrew understanding of worship as it relates to form, place and time, and the role of the King as worship leader. The tension between God's transcendence and immanence is evident in discussions about Hebrew worship. The role of music and the arts is related to praise, especially in the context of the Psalms and Davidic worship. "Enter His Courts With Praise" also includes numerous helpful charts and illustrations.
Dr. Hill identifies a number of parallels between vibrant, God honoring worship of the Old Testament and some of the trends in worship today. Included are trends such as: the corporate nature of worship (as opposed to some of the negative effects of individualism), worship as active rather than passive, an attention to history as well as the bible, and a more holistic understanding of the relationship between God and man.
This book is an excellent resource for pastors and worship leaders. An understanding of Old Testament worship remains essential for effective worship leadership in today's church. Readers may be surprised at how relevant Old Testament teaching on worship is to the growing church of a postmodern world.

I have only made three of the dishes from this book so far, but each one I've cooked would have easily been worth its price. I whipped up a batch of "Vietnamese Quick Chicken Pho" and enjoyed this light and perky version of a classic Vietnam favorite. No, it was not the interstellar barritone beef broth version you might get from a place which specializes in simmering it for many hours, but it went together fast and had a bright balanced flavor with some deep notes which belied its speedy construction. I next woked up a batch of "Ants Climbing A Tree"-the bean thread staple from China with bits of pork which evoke its unusual name. I don't care what it's called; I call it tasty. Finally, I built the "Cold Sesame Noodles, Sichuan Style" which produced a deep nutty flavor rolling over my taste buds hinting ginger, scallion, garlic, pepper heat, and creaminess from the tahini-fascinating. As a home cook, I see many recipes to be a relationship where time and effort produce better taste. I am amazed at the profoundly delicious tastes of these dishes for such little time and effort. I've only actually tried three so far, but if this keeps up, I'm in trouble-the good kind!

EASY ASIAN NOODLES offers OVER 60 recipes for noodle dishes easy for any cook - even newcomers to Asian cuisine. Many take less than half an hour from concept to table, and dishes from every corner of the continent make for a fine presentation. Add color photos and step-by-step sidebars of information and the result is an appealing pick for those new to Asian cuisine or with little access to exotic ingredients.

Depends upon what you mean by easy!

I was disappointed to see that most of the dishes require many more ingredients than my modest pantry currently holds -- several called for more than 20 ingredients, which is not my idea of "easy" cooking. However, there are many positive aspects of this book, including detailed information on the types of Asian noodles, cooking tools, and ingredients. There are many beautiful full-page color photographs so you can see what the dish should look like when served. In my opinion this is a book more for an intermediate home cook who may already have many of the ingredients and tools, rather than for a beginner in either cooking in general or preparing Asian food.
