Kitty's owners are home with a big surprise for Kitty. But what is it? Kitty, reeling in horror, thinks it's a . . . dog. The neighbor cats are convinced it's a cat. But we all know that it's really a BABY!

With Nick Bruel's trademark mix of antic humor (this time involving a Kitty game show and the Kitty Olympics―which the baby wins hands down), riotous illustrations, total mayhem, and Uncle Murray Fun Facts, this may be the funniest Kitty book yet, and the one that hits closest to home.

two kids give four thumbs up
By BenHenry
My boys just got the book (they're big fans of all things Bad Kitty) so here's their review:
"...in one of the parts, the baby screams so loud that aliens on another planet can hear it. I really like this book" said my 6.5 year old.
"It's a great book and it's really funny I got to say" said my 8 year old. "Every part of the book contains lots of good illustrations and writing that has feeling in it." (!!!)
This is the first book for the boys' summer reading lists and it's really great to have them wanting to read it rather than go to battle over reading. Highly recommend!

Bad Kitty Meets Her Match - The Showdown!
By Amazon Customer
Bad Kitty has destroyed her house! She's terrorized her own birthday party! She's pummeled her owner during the dreaded 'bath attempt'! She's sent Uncle Murray into a state of shock while (attempting to) housesit her and Puppy! But has Kitty finally met her match?
'Bad Kitty Meets the Baby' pits Kitty against the new baby and hilarity (and destruction) ensue when Kitty decides the baby has to go. In the battle of Kitty verses 'the baby', who will win? Hilarity ensues when Kitty tries to put the baby for sale (along with a 'free Puppy'), then tries to box the baby up much to her owner's dismay. And when Kitty's friends instigate the 'Cat Olympics' (and make the baby an official cat...)in a winner-take-all 'who's the best cat' standing will Kitty win or has she met her match in...'the baby'?
Anyone who loves the 'Bad Kitty' books will definitely enjoy this one as well! It's hilarious, it's entertaining and Bruel has included his usual 'Uncle Murray's Fun Facts'. Definitely worth buying and adding to the collection!
Let the battle begin! And may the best cat be left standing!

Funny Story with a great message
By A Customer
Review by This Kid Reviews Books! Find me on the Web!

Bad Kitty had it really good until Puppy came along. It took quite a while for Bad Kitty to get used to having Puppy around. Everything was almost back to normal when A BABY SHOWS UP!!! Bad Kitty isn't sure what this new thing is! She thinks maybe it's a kind of dog. Bad Kitty's cat friends come over and she thinks that they will certainly help get rid of this new dog but her friends think the baby is a cat and enter the baby in the Pussycat Olympics! Will the baby be a better cat than Bad Kitty? Will Bad Kitty succeed in trying to get rid of the baby? WILL the baby EVER get her bath? Read the book to find out!

The Bad Kitty chapter books aren't complicated stories but there is always a nice message in each. Mr. Bruel's latest Bad Kitty chapter book that puts Bad Kitty versus a new baby has a really great message about adoption and family at the end. The book is an easy read and the characters are great. I enjoyed reading it a lot. I like how the owners of Bad Kitty add narration throughout the book even thought you never really see them. I think it is an excellent book for kids 8+ and even younger advanced readers. The book would be great for kids who have trouble reading through an entire book because, in this book, the illustrations help tell the story and this may keep some kids interest. I went back a couple of times through the book to look at the illustrations again and again because they add so much to the story.

Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare

Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601–02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centres on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (who is disguised as a boy) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion, with plot elements drawn from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first recorded performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-In this verbal and visual treat, readers have the opportunity to enjoy one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. Coville's author's note explains that his prose adaptation is "not meant as a replacement for the original, but as an appetizer for the greater feast still to come." Thus, the story is clear and carefully told, making it easy both to follow the primary and secondary plot lines and to appreciate the intricacies of their interweavings. Coville keeps the flavor of the playwright's poetic language by using actual quotes from the play and expressions and a formal sentence structure true to the style of Elizabethan times. Delightful full-page, colored pen-and-ink illustrations add just the right touch of humor to the already wacky tale. Raglin gives a distinctive identity to all of the characters, despite their attempted disguises, and he does a particularly good job of differentiating the buffoons of the subplot from the more realistically drawn dramatis personae. Colors and designs clearly suggest the Italian court dress of the times, and accurate architectural details add life to the settings. More suited to modern audiences than Charles and Mary Lamb's classic Tales from Shakespeare (Signet, 1986), and far better written than Jan Dean's Twelfth Night (Oxford, 2002), this is a version that will have young listeners begging to portray the Bard's scenes onstage. And, isn't that, after all, the whole point?-Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-6. The latest in Coville's series of retold Shakespearean plays, this volume provides a short, prose version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, a romantic comedy that offers young people such promising elements as separated twins, a woman disguised as a man, a drunken buffoon, courtship, swordplay, mistaken identity, and a practical joke. Though simplified, the story is intact and bits of the original language are preserved. Large-scale ink drawings, warmed with tints of color and shaded with cross-hatching, clearly depict the action. As Coville states in his Author's Note, "Twelfth Night remains one of the most read and performed of Shakespeare's plays." Children looking for a preperformance introduction to the play's twisting plot will find this an appealing choice. Carolyn Phelan

'The combination of careful scholarship emphasising the inspiration and excitement of the theatrical experience, with the freshly edited text, should make this one of the most useful new texts of Twelfth Night.' Theatre Journal

Excellent addition to your 12 Night shelf
By Sammy Clemens
There are several really worthwhile editions of 12th Night, but don't overlook this one.

The Foreword and notes are excellent and useful; the format's sturdy and readable.

It's a good copy to have for the scholar/performer/director.

Understanding Shakespeare
By Amazon Customer
For a long time I would not let my students use No Fear because I wanted them to be able to read the play in Shakespeare's words, but when I tired to discuss the plays with them, I always felt like I was the only who read the play. (I use it for Hamlet as well.) After I let them use it the first time, I was so excited to hear my students' comments on the play because they actually understood what they were reading. When they write about the play and when we discuss it, we use Shakespeare's words. We also compare the modern words and Shakespeare's words. I really like the No Fears and recommend them to people who really want to understand Shakespeare. I have taught high school and am now teaching at a university, so I know the No Fears are great on both levels.

Naxos complete recording the best so far
By F. Behrens
Please notice that G.H.'s in-house review above does not refer to the recording pictured above, nor do any of the reviews so far. What follows refers only to the Naxos set.
There are now three complete recordings of available. We have the older and elegantly read version on Harper Audio with Dorothy Tutin as the best Viola of the lot. Acted with a bit more verve though with less poetry is the Arkangel Shakespeare recording with a Scottish Malvolio and a cast of younger sounding actors who are making names for themselves in Great Britain. However I am very impressed with the "Twelfth Night" that is one of the latest additions to the Naxos Classic Drama series.
By far, this is the best-produced "Twelfth Night." One actually feels he is hearing an actual stage performance with all of the action but with the loss of none of the poetry. Perhaps the Viola does sound a little maturer than imagination would have her and the Sir Toby Belch a little less belchy sounding than others. None of the Festes sing as marvelously as did Peter Pears on the long deleted Marlowe Society recording (also with Tutin); however, on this Naxos set David Timson stays nicely in tune--and directs the production to boot. And he keeps things moving neatly along, which is saying a lot for Shakespeare recordings.
The CD version has the advantage of excellent tracking cues for not only each scene but for key points within the scene. The Harper CDs give a new track only for each new scene and the tapes (of course) are quite useless in that regard. The Arkangel series at present exists only on tapes but they are planning to reissue the entire series on CDs. So this Naxos release is the one of choice so far.

A Guerrilla Guide to Doing Business in China, by Christian D. Taulkinghorn

A Guerrilla Guide to Doing Business in China is aimed not at multi-nationals but small entrepreneurs. It focusses on opportunities suitable for individuals that do not need large amounts of financial investment.
The general perception is that China has now begun a long-term economic slowdown. Industries that allow foreign investment have become so competitive and costly that many foreign companies are moving on to find better opportunities in other developing economies. Arbitrary law enforcement, rising labour costs and tough entry barriers set by the government are convincing large corporations to seek easier pickings elsewhere. This means that there more and more cracks and niches where small business operators can gain a foothold. Technomads and Perpetual Travellers especially, are nimble and flexible enough to profit from China's maturing markets. This book is collection of possible opportunities as recorded by an entrepreneur and travel writer that has spent the last ten years criss-crossing this vast country.
There are plenty of books out there on how to do business in China. This book is different in that it lists specific opportunities that deserve further investigation. If you know that you want to do business in China but are still not sure which area is most suitable then this is the book for you. This book also benefits from a supporting discussion forum at guerrillainchina.com where potential entrepreneurs are able ask for advice and 'old China hands' can share their experiences.

A wealth of information

Lots of information in here. Nearly eight hundred pages of material which is great when so many other ebooks these days are just fifty or sixty rushed out pages. There really is a lot of information in here, mostly stuff that just is not covered elsewhere even on the China business related forums that I have seen.

I haven't seen this kind of information anywhere else. It is not in guide books or other China business books. Maybe because it is all based on personal experience. It won't appeal to everybody but for anybody visiting or going to live in China it offers some really interesting insights.

This is an excellent book with which to study the Christmas Story. I bought it on sale for Kindle, however I do wish I had bought the hard copy. It is in a lovely gift book style book. I plan on giving some copies away next year for Christmas. Whenever you have 6 well known authors such as these under the cover of a beautifully bound gift book it is sure to be a winner. I highly recommend it and give it 5 shining stars.

Expected more
By wadr
Bought this book since I was in the mood for some Christmas readings and it was highly rated. Hey, "six beloved Christian communicators" with their Christmas messages gotta be good, right?

Sadly for me, the book didn't live up to expectations. First there was the inaccuracy: the magi may have been following a star, but they did NOT find a stable. They found a house many months after Jesus was born. Second, the questionable theology: my understanding is that an omniscient God does not need to take on human form to understand us, as suggested. There were other assertions that I would consider opinions, some of which I think stretched the truth a bit too far for my preference. I believe there's enough substance in the "Good News" without having to be overly "creative" in order to make an impressive point. Which brings me to my third issue: many of the messages nevertheless I found weak. There was very little I would highlight or bookmark. The times I would pause to reflect were usually because of supposed facts or opinions I did not agree with or did not seem logical or coherent.
Admittedly, this is just my opinion. For context, I am more likely to enjoy the works of Philip Yancey and Tony Campolo (who many might not consider similar authors), with various apologists thrown in. Although I recognize the names of the contributors to this book, I am only vaguely familiar with their writings. It may be that if you like these six authors (and many, many people do), you will enjoy this compilation. Or maybe it's hard to improve on the simple yet awesome Christmas Story.

Harness your mind’s innate tendency to wander, stall, rest, and unfocus and become more productive—in the boardroom, living room, or classroom.

Named one of Coastal Living’s Best Books for the Beach This Summer

To finish tasks and achieve goals, most people believe that more focus is the solution. We rely on to-do lists, calendar reminders, noise-blocking headphones, and sometimes medication to help us concentrate—even though these tactics often fail to substantially improve productivity. Drawing on the latest brain research, compelling stories from his psychological practice, and colorful examples of counterintuitive success from sports, business, education, and the arts, neuroscientist Srini Pillay, M.D., challenges traditional ideas about productivity, revealing the lasting, positive benefits of adding deliberate and regular unfocus to your repertoire. A fascinating tour through brain wavelengths and rhythm, mindsets, and mental relaxation, Tinker Dabble Doodle Try demonstrates how specific kinds of planned unfocus stimulate cognitive calmness, jumpstart productivity, enhance innovation, inspire creativity, improve long-term memory, and, of course, help you stay on target.

Tinkering with ideas and with things releases your mind to wander from a state of stuckness into a possibility frame of mind, triggering neural connections and new insights.

Dabbling in a new endeavor—whether a hobby or fantasy—disrupts your habitual and reactive thinking, helping you find new solutions to old problems.

Doodling can help you tap into another brain frequency to remove obstacles and create opportunities and inspiration.

With techniques for training the brain to unfocus, concepts for scheduling busy lives, and ideas for controlling this new cognitive-toggling capability, Tinker Dabble Doodle Try will change how you think about daydreaming, relaxing, leaving work unfinished, and even multitasking. What you’ll discover is a greater freedom, a deeper intelligence, and a more profound joy in your life.

The Beat of Your Brain

Thought is the labor of the intellect, reverie its pleasure. To replace thought with reverie is to confound poison with nourishment.

—Victor Hugo

I was a straight-A student prior to my second year at medical school, but during that year, in the context of an escalating workload, my grades suddenly slumped.

Even though I burned the midnight oil, I wasn’t able to make headway. I sat for hours studying human anatomy, trying to memorize where muscles attached, and where in the body nerves and blood vessels traveled. On more than one occasion, I ran myself ragged, only to wake up with my head buried in a pile of bones.

Nobody could have spent more time than I did studying and working, yet the harder I focused, the worse I seemed to do. Little did I know that I was operating my brain like a teenager driving a car for the first time, taking off at breakneck speed, then jerkily screeching to an abrupt halt. The result: too much wear and tear on the brake pads and gears!

I struggled to wrap my head around what was happening. And I didn’t even register that I was physically exhausted until the penny eventually dropped during the vacation between my second and third years. That’s when I decided to make a few changes.

Desperate, I determined to start working smarter instead of just harder. I saw my failings as a code I had to crack, so I tinkered with habit and lifestyle changes. Even though it went against my work ethic, I took short breaks every forty-five minutes while studying. I made an effort to spend more time away from work and with my friends. I committed to sleeping well before undertaking any big stretches of studying. And because I had always heard such great things about its restorative power, I began meditating for twenty minutes twice a day.

My grades improved. My energy level rose. Eventually, I was at the top of my class again. I had no idea exactly how my lifestyle hacks had worked, but I was certainly happy with the results, so I strove to include these strategies throughout the rest of medical school—with great results.

But I didn’t really learn the lesson I should have from that episode. My subsequent residency in psychiatry started off with a bang as I burned the proverbial midnight oil anew. Eager to immerse myself in my cases, I spent hours with patients in the hospital. And when I got home, I threw off my work clothes, ate dinner, and read books and psychiatric journals voraciously. After my first clinical rotation, I looked forward to my feedback session with my supervisor.

But the meeting went very differently than I thought it would. “You are a really dedicated doctor,” he said. “It must be a little frustrating that your knowledge base is far more developed than your peers’. You probably can’t have the conversations that you want to, right?”

I didn’t really feel that way, but I thought I heard positive feedback and took it gladly. Then came a comment that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

“We’re a little concerned that you spend as much time as you do on the inpatient units. If you keep this up, I’m afraid you’ll have a ton of information in your head, but you won’t receive a superior education. I presume that’s why you wanted to come to Harvard in the first place?”

The question was ironic and chilling, to say the least. I realized I had reverted to my old bad habits. I was trapped by the wrong assumptions about ambition, exhausting myself both physically and mentally all over again.

My supervisor explained that taking breaks to allow thoughts to congeal is one of the most important aspects of a true education. He prescribed walking through the woods in the middle of the day, spending more time on park benches with my colleagues, and even going into therapy to see if I could develop insights that could help me unpack my days.

Now, having studied how our brains manage focus and unfocus, I understand what my supervisor already knew: there was no nuance to my cognitive rhythm.

When you think of great rhythm, you likely think first of music—say, Michael Jackson’s or Elvis Presley’s dancing—or you conjure the amazing riffs of a guitarist like Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, or Keith Richards. In all those instances, a run of notes or movement repeats with regularity—a defining beat with on and off moments. Play “Voodoo Child,” “Come as You Are,” or “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and you’ll connect instantly with an extraordinary rhythm.

But rhythm is not only a musical concept. It’s essential in your body as well. Your heart has to expand and contract on time. You have to breathe in and out with great regularity. And you can’t escape the circadian rhythm of sleep-wake cycles. Cognitive rhythm is the ability to intermingle focus and unfocus (the on and off moments) in the most effective way.

On any given day, you have to be prepared for and respond accordingly to the tumult of life: the constant starting, stopping, negotiating of “bumps,” and changing direction. As I discovered in medical school, if the only tool that you have in your thinking toolkit is focus, you will quickly become fatigued. Your brain will shut down prematurely. That’s far from optimal. It’s far better if you proactively learn to prevent it before it crashes. Furthermore, even though you aren’t aware of it, studies show that you spend close to half of your day in mini–mental journeys away from the task at hand. This kind of spontaneous fluctuation is no more an effective use of brainpower than the switching off that happens when you’re completely exhausted.

Like the difference between a light bulb blowing a fuse and dimming the lights to save energy, there’s a huge difference between running out of steam and putting your brain on one of its dimmer modes. In the latter case, you can metaphorically turn the light back on to bright again when you need or want it. In the former, you’re finished for the time being!

Surfing Your Brainwaves

Although a brain cell’s resting voltage is less than that of an AA battery, electricity passing across the cell membrane generates a massive force—about fourteen million volts per meter, more than four times the force required to produce lightning during a thunderstorm. Multiply that by 100 billion brain cells, and that’s the magnitude of your brainpower! It’s impressive, to say the least.

From the moment of birth, your brain is generating these electrical impulses across its complex landscape. The impulses occur as waves, and every thought, feeling, and behavior corresponds with a different combination of such waves. Attention is no exception. It’s useful to think of waves of attention as musical notes—the low-pitched notes of a trombone, the high-pitched notes of a flute, and everything in between. Even at baseline, your brain’s attention fluctuates, aiming for a harmony among these different notes with astounding speed, power, and accuracy. Doctors can detect these “notes” with an EEG (electroencephalogram) much as they can capture your heart’s rhythm with an EKG (electrocardiogram). When we look at all the waves that people can generate, they appear on a continuum from more to less frequent and, therefore, from faster to slower.

Beta waves are the “focus” waves. They would appear on your EEG when your eyes are glued to whatever task you’re doing. Following beta down the “musical scale” are alpha, theta, and delta waves, each respectively slower, reflecting states of unfocus ranging from pure relaxation to meditation and deep sleep. Gamma waves are the odd ones out. Faster than beta waves, they nonetheless come on when you’re either focused or unfocused, suggesting that focus and unfocus are not as separate as we might think.

Each of these brainwave “settings” correlates with a different brain function. Being a peak performer at anything—a homemaker, a teacher, a CEO, a chess player, a researcher—requires knowing when and how to switch between the different settings. And, most important, it requires understanding that these waves work together to create the best brain states to perform the task at hand.

Your Circuits in Sync

Some people have astounding lucidity. They impress us with their seemingly tireless productivity and razor-sharp clarity. Georg Philipp Telemann, for example, composed two hundred overtures in a two-year period, and Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod, a flexible catheter, bifocal eyeglasses, and umpteen other things. They were masters of the frontoparietal cortex, or what I call the focus circuit. Always on task, they have focus on demand.

Part of a larger central executive network (CEN), the focus circuit keeps you on task even when you’re not as extreme as Telemann or Franklin. Whether you’re following a recipe or performing a complex procedure, filling out your tax forms or listening carefully to your GPS as you make your way through unknown territory, your focus networks are like a flashlight, lighting up the path just ahead.

Yet this faculty by itself is woefully insufficient, and on its own, razor-sharp clarity can feel shallow. It’s like a piano player playing all the right notes but without heart. To be sure, if you have ever played or heard the music of Telemann, you know that he relied on much more than focus to create his music. That said, this shallowness manifests in those who, unlike him, in so many other areas of life, stick only to focus: the bureaucratic boss, the one-dimensional bottom-liner, the workhorse colleague whose reports are precise yet lack depth. Their pronouncements are clear, yet they leave us wanting more nuance. To extend the GPS metaphor: You want to know what awaits you farther along your trip. You want to at least know the midterm future, or be able to anticipate the next hour, rather than see only the road immediately ahead.

Nuance and depth require diffusing the beam of the focus flashlight so that you can see important objects and details in your periphery as well. The brain circuit that allows for this broadening of vision is the default mode network, or what I refer to as the unfocus circuit. Before science understood its true function, the DMN was thought of as the “Do Mostly Nothing” circuit. But over time, we have come to see that it is one of the greatest consumers of energy in the brain. Moreover, it is extensively connected with the focus circuits, in a kind of brainwave overflow and integration. Focus and unfocus are like a good red sauce: it’s hard to tell if the meat is flavoring the sauce or the sauce is flavoring the meat. They simply work together.

In the brain, a mix of brainwaves enters and leaves each circuit with a preponderance of one type of wave for any particular function. For instance, at the peak of unfocus, alpha waves may appear in the DMN, but delta waves may also appear in certain unfocus regions, and they may be mixed with beta waves, because focus and unfocus circuits are constantly “talking” to each other. Similarly, more beta than delta waves may appear in the focus circuit, to orient your focused attention. But it’s rarely just one type of wave alone. Which is why talking about focused and unfocused circuits is a false dichotomy. They are acting at the same time and are designed to work together. It’s we who stop this natural connection in our brains when we overfocus.

The musician who is connected to a past tragedy while singing a sad song pulls on our heartstrings more effectively. It’s not just the technical execution of the voice that produces an amazing performance but also the convergence of technicality and precision with the diffuse past and future, with self and other. Unfocus circuits bring on this rich complexity and authenticity. And they can be trained too.

Fritz Reiner, a twentieth-century Hungarian-born conductor, is one of the greatest conductors of all time. Many attribute the world-class ascent of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) to his leadership. And it must have been entertaining to watch him at work: using his entire body, he would usher in the strings with his hands, then puff out his cheeks when it was the brass section’s turn, and when a section to his right had to stop while he was looking left, he would kick out a foot. As a testament to how great the CSO was under his direction, after hearing a performance in Boston, Arthur Fiedler, the conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, said to the CSO, “You’re not men. You’re gods.”

As amazing a conductor as Reiner was, by most reports he was also tyrannical. He did not tolerate imperfections, and when he was rehearsing with the orchestra, he allowed nobody to be a slacker. When you were playing for him, you had to play perfectly. You had to attend to all of him. One slip, and you were in trouble. And when you were silent, you had to listen without distraction.

A musician playing for Reiner or any exacting conductor, as you can imagine, faces the cognitive challenge of being internally connected just enough to play deeply from the heart, but simultaneously of being exquisitely sensitive to what the others are playing and what the conductor is asking of him or her. A musician who becomes lost in the playing risks missing cues and really hearing what others are playing. A musician who focuses too intently on what others are doing or on what the conductor is prompting is likely to play with less heart and emotion. Somehow the brain has to manage the delicate balance between focus and unfocus.

But in our day-to-day lives, we sometimes forget this and behave like a musician who is paying attention only to Fritz Reiner and not to the other musicians. We may be so absorbed in a task that we notice nothing else. Leaders, parents, and sports team players face the same challenge: to be “in the zone,” yet also to be aware of their surroundings—to remember to focus and unfocus as well.

The Many Notes of Your DMN

When you understand the quality and extent of the DMN’s connections in the brain, the “working together” of focus and unfocus becomes more apparent.

It acts as a distraction filter: Paradoxically, unfocus circuits play an active and crucial role in keeping you focused; they act almost like sponges, absorbing distractions to keep you on a short-term task.

It builds mental flexibility: Unfocus circuits act as a pivot, helping you switch your attention from one task to the next. Engage your unfocus circuits enough, and your thinking becomes very flexible indeed.

It connects you more deeply with yourself and others: Unfocus circuits connect you with elements of your own story, stored in different parts of your brain. They are the chief writers of your autobiography. Your personal traits and self-reflections can all become part of the moment because your unfocus circuits can activate them at the same time. Unfocus circuits reach far back into your stored memories, letting your history inform every moment of focus. In this sense, they transport you toward yourself.

Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, and Try each day to unlock the power of your creative mind.
By Russell Fanelli
At the end of his self-help book about unlocking the power of the unfocused mind, Dr. Srini Pillay says: “Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try is not meant to be a book; it is meant to herald a new an invigorated movement.” Dr. Pillay wants us to find our true selves; that is, “To be nobody but ourselves in a world that is night and day trying to make us just like everybody else. (and as EE Cummings continues) This is the hardest fight any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.” Throughout his book Dr. Pillay gives us the tools we will need to fully access the power of our minds to become our unique and creative selves.

My suggestion for readers of this book is first to move quickly through the text to get the big picture and then to go back to the beginning and one chapter at a time apply the many good ideas for taking full advantage of our amazing minds.

In Chapter 1 Dr. Pillay discusses the value of releasing our minds from a narrow minded focus on our work that prevents us from taking full advantage of whole brain thinking. He talks about the many roads to unfocus such as reverie, mind wandering, imagination, daydreaming, self-talk, using your body, and meditation. Qigong is one meditative practice that works well to help us learn to breathe and assimilate the light and life energy that are so important to our health and well-being. For those readers who want a taste of what Qigong is all about, go to YouTube and type in Bill Douglas Qigong for an excellent introduction to this meditative practice.

Chapter 2 introduces us to ways to “Conjure Creativity.” Perhaps his best suggestion is to challenge “the norm, your biases about your creativity, and your concreteness.” We were all curious once when we were children, but much of that curiosity and creativity was drummed out of us in school where we were admonished to color within the lines. Dr. Pillay wants us to get outside the lines and tinker, dabble, and doodle as we reawaken our possibility thinking and dream dreams, but then “are willing to pay the price to make them come true.” Perhaps the most curious person who ever lived was the great Leonardo da Vinci and readers who want to learn more about the curiosity of the master should read Michael Gelb’s book, How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci. Curiosity is the first of the da Vincian principles.

Dynamic Learning in a Brave New World is the title of the third chapter and Dr. Pillay enlarges and expands on our ideas concerning feedback, what Ken Blanchard in his One Minute Manager calls “the breakfast of champions” and what David McClelland says is one of the hallmarks of the achievement motivated person. Dr. Pillay advises us to “carefully consider feedback with a growth mindset; challenge its relevance.” Sadly, on the job we often work in a feedback vacuum, waiting for anyone to notice what we are doing and comment on its value to the organization. We must take responsibility ourselves for getting the information we need to, as Dr. Pillay says, “fall forward or fast.”

Mastering Multitasking, Chapter 4 in the book, is a popular subject in the 21st Century as many of us try to juggle multiple job and family responsibilities. Dr. Pillay has examined the research on the subject and agrees that “Much recent neuroscience research tells us that the brain doesn’t really do tasks simultaneously, as we thought (hoped) it might. In fact, we just switch tasks quickly…. That start/stop/start process is rough on us: rather than saving time, it costs time (even very small micro seconds), it’s less efficient, we make more mistakes, and over time it can be energy sapping.” Dr. Pillay agrees and suggests that we “do tasks when they best fit into your day and provide local feedback as you do so.”

By now readers of this lengthy review have gotten a good sampling of the information and advice Dr. Pillay provides in his book. He summarizes and consolidates much useful information and does so keeping our interest and attention through his use of case studies taken from his practice as a psychiatrist. At times I felt as if some of these case studies went on a bit longer than necessary, but that said, his direct and clear writing style made reading his book a pleasure.

As mentioned at the beginning of this review, this book is meant to be applied, chapter by chapter. Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, and Try each day and keep a journal of the progress made in what Dr. Pillay tells us is the adventure of our life.

Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered, by E.F. Schumacher

Small is Beautiful is E. F. Schumacher's stimulating and controversial study of world economies. This remarkable book is as relevant today and its themes as pertinent and thought-provoking as when it was first published thirty years ago.

Small is Beautiful looks at the economic structure of the Western world in a revolutionary way. Schumacher maintains that Man's current pursuit of profit and progress, which promotes giant organisations and increased specialisation, has in fact resulted in gross economic inefficiency, environmental pollution and inhumane working conditions. Schumacher challenges the doctrine of economic, technological and scientific specialisation and proposes a system of Intermediate
Technology, based on smaller working units, communal ownership and regional workplaces utilising local labour and resources.

Review
"A book of heart and hope and downright common sense about the future."
—Peter Lewis, Daily Mail

About the Author
Before the publication of Small is Beautiful, his bestselling reappraisal of Western economic attitudes, DR. E. F. SCHUMACHER was already well known as an economist, journalist and progressive entrepreneur. Born in Germany, he first came to England in 1930 as a Rhodes Scholar to study economics at New College, Oxford. In later years, his advice on problems of rural development was sought by many overseas governments.

Economics and Environment Book
By Kristi Komar
This book was published in 1973. The author, E.F. Schumacher , was ahead of his time as an environmentalist. The book is a collection of essays divided into four parts. It is not a typical econonics book filled with numbers, charts, graphs, and formulas. "Bigness is the nemesis of anarchism, whether the bigness is that of public or privat bureaucracies, because from bigness comes impersonality , insensitivity, and a lust to concentrate abstract power. Hence, Schumacher's title ' Small is Beautiful.'" He weaves together threads from Galbraith and Gandhi, capitalism and Buddhism, science and psychology.
