About the Author
Frank Nicholas is Emeritus Professor of Animal Genetics in the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney.� He has edited and co-authored several books about genetics and one about Charles Darwin, and he created and maintains Online Mendelian Inheritance of Animals (OMIA; omia.angis.org.au), a comparative knowledge-base of genetic disorders and other familial traits in non-laboratory animals.��

A Great Book for the More Scientifically-Inclined Dog Breeder

As a more scientifically-oriented dog breeder taking an online course in veterinary genetics, I found this book to be quite useful at developing my understanding of genetics and in offering me a better foundation for understanding genetic testing that is now available in most dog breeds. The book covered topics that are not generally covered in many general dog breeding books or even (currently available) dog genetics books (e.g., chapters 8,9, 10, 13 to end of the book). One wonders why basic genetics is not covered in every dog breeding book given the advent of genetic testing, some of which is valuable and some of which (if carried to the extreme or inappropriately applied) can have devastating consequences for the breed.

Although this book is not targeted at the dog breeder, I think a few of the (dig deeper type) breeders would find it very useful. On the other hand, as a business woman, I see this book as targeting mainly a veterinary student/veterinarian and on the fringes, the more serious dog breeder. We need veterinarians who understand the challenge facing dog breeders and I think this book will help develop those people. The average dog breeder would probably find the level of the now out-of-print dog breeder genetics book by as Jackie Isabell ("Genetics: An Introduction for Dog Breeders," 2002) more readable. Still there are a few of us dog breeders who want more and "Introduction to Veterinary Genetics" offers additional depth at the individual dog level, along with a view of genetics at the population level.

Gives you the basics and gets to the point.

Used this book in my veterinary biostatistics class. It is easy to follow, and fairly clear in getting the information across. Quite readable, you can get through the whole book in a couple of days and then refer back to it as necessary. The chapters are short with practice questions and answers in each. Would recommend it if you need a basic understanding of T-tests, F-tests, ANOVA, linear and multiple regression, Chi-square, etc.

The book is meant to be used with a statistics package, not as a stand-alone for learning how to perform the calculations yourself. It gives you the concept and an example, then refers you to a statistics package to perform the calculations. This was reasonable to me since that is what you will do in real life anyway. It then goes through understanding the output of the calculations performed.

I purchased this as it was the required text for a course I'm taking. A basic understanding of genetics and the taxonomy of the subject is helpful (there is a glossary in back) as this is not a truly "basic" intro to the subject of genetics in general. There is no question that Dr. Frank Nicholas is one of the pre-eminent researchers and theorists in veterinary genetics. This book is a goldmine of information regarding the subject of veterinary genetics, arguably the most comprehensive guide on the subject.

The best book on the subject

There are very few thinkers, if any, whose work has been discussed by others as much as Artistotle. His influence on western thought on almost any subject has been immense. Dryden's lament that humanity have made the Stagirite's "torch their universal light" gives a measure of his influence. So the claim that Scott Meikle's book is the best on the subject is very strong indeed. But I think it is wholly justified. For Meikle discusses only the great philosopher's economic thought. And he is a master of his subject. His knowledge of the texts is profound matched only by his mastery of the literature, ancient and modern, his comments relevant, his prose beautiful and his arguments convincing. Even though he is not an economist he displays a surpisingly deep understanding of economic theory and history of economic thought.
His book is a collection of essays with enough structure to be read as a complete book. He examines A.'s analysis in Nicomachean Ethics and Politics and discusses modern interpretations of his thought. He argues for the existence of an economic thought in Aristotle, against the arguments of authorities such as Schumpeter (with his almost patronising view) or Finley who wrote the (new) Palgrave entry on Aristotle. He also argues convincingly against a neoclassical interpretation of Aristotle, a view that has crept in even in authoritative translations of the Nicomachean Ethics text.

this was an intriging book that lead to my revival. Without this both of my views towards economic behaviors and theories would not be able to exist and penetrate throught the ills of an intangible society. Both philosophy and economics deal with the soul individual and aristotle a genius of all time deals with many profound issues that the individual must command to gather success and demand virtue.

Its a first edition book, so there were some grammatical errors and spelling errors, but even aside from that, no one in the class could make heads or tails with the message the book was trying to convey. Even my professor admitted it was a mistake to try this book out.

Finally an atlas of the bible lands with lots of great maps in it. This has been my third attempt at finding one. The others have an abundance of informative text, the readers digest version is the best for this, but few maps. And, apart from biblical studies, I am also using this atlas along with another book, 'Ancient Civilizations' and any place or name reference not shown on a map in there, is in here.

This is a great book with lots of helpful maps. Some people like to hold it in their hands and others like to see it on a computer screen. I like to hold the book in my hands. This is very helpful in my study to teach ladies Bible classes and children's classes. I highly recommend this book.
