About the Author
William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 41 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. His books include "Data and Computer Communications, Eighth Edition" (Prentice Hall, 2007), which has become the standard in the field. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering.

Epic work revised for the mid-201x's

It's hard to do justice to this work in a short review as the scope of the book is wide and it is not superficial in the depth of its coverage. With the growth of the subject and the rapid changes, an author addressing the subject of Computer Organisation and Architecture faces a huge challenge in what topics to cover and in what depth to cover them. In my opinion, in producing this text-book, William Stallings has tackled these challenges very well, with a wide range of topics being covered in a good deal of detail. This Tenth Edition has added coverage of GPGPU, heterogeneous multicore processors, cloud computing, new non-volatile RAM techniques, and others. The coverage of “embedded systems” has been extended to address the huge increase in scope which has occurred over the past few year; the coverage addressing the concepts of application processors (capable of running virtual memory based operating systems) and microcontrollers.
I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how modern computer systems work from a hardware perspective, and for people who should know how they work - too often today people on the software side of computing have too little knowledge of the hardware.

and this is one of the worst books I've ever used

Had to rent this book for a computer science class. I am a senior, and this is one of the worst books I've ever used. There is way too much text to remember anything, and problems at the end of the chapters are pretty much unsolvable just by reading through the chapter. A great waste of my time and money.

Great book on Computer Architecture.

This book is well written and is complete. It helps the reader get a sound comprehensive foundation in the computer architecture field. The author makes good use of examples throughout the book to explain the theoretical aspects covered.
This book is a must read for students that learn computer architecture and for professionals in this field, in order to understand both the evolution and the most recent trends and actual implementations of the computer architecture organization concepts.
The printed book also gives access to additional online resources that are very helpful, homework problems and solutions. And two additional chapters are available online.
