Not as informative as it advertised to be!

It had the information I found in the book I was reading the "the Unknown Arabs" by Tariq Berry however it wasn't as informative as I thought no love lost! I will keep it my Islamic/African library!

Interesting expansion to the series

Fairest - Levana’s Story by Marissa Meyer is a prequel to her fairytale reimagining series The Lunar Chronicles. It provides the backstory to series antagonist Queen Levana Blackburn of Luna. If you are new to The Lunar Chronicles, PLEASE don’t start with this book - go read Cinder, Scarlet and Cress and then come back to it. It will be more engaging in that way.

This book is a very focussed character study of Queen Levana and how she turned from a naive, self absorbed young girl into the tyrant our heroines are trying to depose. There is little in the way of worldbuilding or major plot development. It remains mostly confined to the Lunar Royal Palace.

What I liked

Character development. This is the focus of the book and is excellently done. We follow Levana’s progression from a self absorbed, naive young girl to the vicious despot of the later books. I appreciated how each step and decision she took along that path was small and logical at the time but each developed her character as it turned out to be. I found her an interesting character, and at many points she gained my sympathy for what she went through.

Character cameos. Many of the characters from the later books made cameo appearances as their younger selves. Even if they weren’t specifically named as such it was great fun to spot Cinder, Cress, Kai and other characters.

Audiobook narration. Once again narration is provided by Rebecca Soler who did the narration for the other books in the series. She does a brilliant job of capturing the characters’ voices and I hope she continues for Winter, the final book in the series.

What I didn’t like

Very expensive for such a short book. This book is really a novella - barely 272 pages or 6 hours and 36 minutes of audiobook - and yet is was priced comparatively expensively. I paid the price but a bit more resentfully than for other books.

No chapter breaks. The book is written in one long narrative unbroken into chapters. Now, I am a working woman and I don’t have the luxury of settling down to long chunks of several hours’ reading. For me, the chapter breaks are valuable to give me a good place to stop.

Not Whispersync for Voice compatible. In other words, the ebook and the audiobook didn’t sync. Combined with the lack of chapter breaks, it made switching between ebook and audiobook a very frustrating experience. If you’re only enjoying the book in one medium this won’t be an issue for you, but I did contribute to my lack of enjoyment.

Less engaging protagonist. Yes, Levana is a fascinating character and yes, I enjoyed learning about her backstory. However, it cannot be said that she is immediately likeable or engaging in the way that Cinder, Scarlet and Cress are.

Less humour. One of the fun parts of The Lunar Chronicles is the banter that is exchanged between our main characters. This was missing from Fairest - Levana’s Story. Thinking back, it’s because in this book we spend very little time with characters who actually like and respect each other. This book contains the first few chapters of Winter, which I listened to, including a scene on the Rampion and I immediately felt “yes, THIS is the Lunar Chronicles I know and love!"

To summarise, while I enjoyed Fairest - Levana’s Story, for me it wasn’t a must-read part of The Lunar Chronicles. Certainly, it shouldn’t be the first book you read in the series. It does provide an interesting expansion to the series though.

I gave Fairest - Levana’s Story 3.5 stars out of five.

The true horrors that lie behind our evil Queen. . .

A twisted fairytale that shows the dark side of an happily ever after. Told in the POV of our favorite evil Queen from the explosive debt that shook the YA genre with a fairytale that has been told time and time again, but not quite as delicious and addicting as CINDER!

Levana story is finally told, and it is enough to make you recoil in revulsion, yet, find a tad bit of sympathy for our evil Queen that's determined to rule the world, making all cower and serve her evil purposes.

Marrissa Meyer is a MASTERMIND of a storyteller!! I love everything this woman writes. She creates the most unique, addicting, oddly disturbing in this case, worlds that could awaken any feelings that have never been roused. Meyer's takes this story by force with her vivid details, developed characterization, flush writing, uniquely enthralling world-building and tantalizing anticipation that seizes you from the first page and does not let up until the very end. FAIREST is another exquisite hit for Meyer's!

When I read CINDER last year I fell head over heels in love with the unique fairytale world, but I despised, yet was fascinated with the evil villain Levana. I had a love/hate relationship with her. On one hand I thought she was despicable and the worst kind of evil, but I also found her the best villain for the story, and this series wouldn't be the same without her. She fit so well with the complex world and all her evil jabs were so riveting as she unleashed her manipulation and wrath on whom ever she chooses. She's as evil as it comes, and I loved the lengths she would go to get what she wanted. She was the perfect villain for this world. She's vile, evil, manipulative, selfish, conceited with her "false beauty" and willing to kill anyone who gets in her way to the throne she wants, and I LOVED every second of all that evilness.

But in FAIREST we get to see how she became the evil queen everyone feared and despised, and the reasons that turned her heart to ice. And trust me, none of what she does is excusable, but you can kinda understand how she was able to become so cruel. I loved reading Levana's POV, it was engrossing to see how she went from the shy, naive, lonely, disfigured girl, to the unstoppable evil queen that bathed her palace walls in blood to rise to the top. And with the power she wielded, she became unstoppable.

In a way I felt sorry for Levana, and at times caught myself even liking her (I said at times, not always. ;) She was very lonely, tortured by her older sister and disfigured by her cruelty. We didn't get to know her parents, the former king and queen of Luna, but from what I gathered from this book, they didn't care about Levana either. They pretty much abandoned her and didn't so much as bat their eye when she was around. And with extreme self esteem issues due to her disfigurement and lack of love, her hate manifested and grew into something evil. Then slowly, very slowly she began to see life very different, a dark place that bent to her will. And when her sister Queen Channary died, leaving the now crown princess Selene the heir to the Luna throne, Levana was able to become the queen regent that would rule all of Luna until Selene turned thirteen. With no one left to stop her, Levana now had the authority she needed to rule all of Luna with an iron fist, lashing out with her cruelty and thirst for blood. Now, if only she could get rid of Princess Selene . . . .

THE PLOT:

Fifteenth year old Levana becomes crown princess to all of Luna after her parents are brutally murdered by a shell seeking retribution for the their ill-willed rule. She's always been neglected, unloved and wanted by everyone including her parents and torturous sister. And after the forced "accident" the made her disfigured, she is more ugly then anyone could of imagined. She tries to brighten her life by using her glamour to hide her true self by wearing a false mask of beauty. The exact opposite of what truly lies on the outside, slowly becomes the inside, until she is falsely beautiful, but truly ugly both inside and out.

Each day torment by her sister Channary, now the Queen of Luna, and exiled by the rest of the court, Levana finds herself daydreaming about a handsome guard who she blindly thinks cares about her. But he's uninterested and ten years her senior, and married to the most beautifulest woman in all of Luna, and she just so happens to be carrying his child. But Levana doesn't care, she stupidly thinks he loves her, and each day her desire and false love grows, becoming hardened and forceful, and viscous and deceiving, until one day she is determined to take what she wants, one way or another he will be hers . . .

Levana's world slowly starts to unravel, but for her, it starts to come together. She will marry the man she wants, she will become his child's mother, she will take what should be hers, she will murder for what is rightfully hers, and she will stop at nothing to not only be the queen of all Luna, but the Empress to all of earth. . .

Power, blood, murder, destruction and false beauty bath the path to Levana's evil reign, and she will hold nothing back has she takes what she's destine to have. Fate has given her all the glories in her world, because she is the best Queen that has ever sat on the Lunar throne, because she is . . .

THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL . . .

Levana's story takes us through the mind of a sociopath, and the fascinating back story of how she became the evil Lunar Queen. FAIREST is a must read for all Lunar fans, I think it'll give you an open mind to the woman behind all the evilness in The Lunar Chronicles. She's an evil, heartless, despicable women, that's equal parts intriguing as she is revolting, and has quickly become my new favorite villain!

Overall, FAIREST was just what I needed to see this world from both sides. This book had great back story and we get to see true glimpses of Levana's true self. I think it puts her character into perspective and helps us understand (but not agree with) some of her choices. This book was a great addition to THE LUNAR CHRONICLES that brings it's own wicked story and is definitely a must read for any Lunar fan!!!

Not what I expected from the Lunar Chronicles

I loved the first three books of the Lunar Chronicles, so it was a no-brainer when I decided to purchase this one. It didn’t take long to realize this book is nothing like the others, and seems more to be a cash grab than anything else. I’m blaming the publishers, because that seems like the most likely explanation of why this exists as a standalone book. I kind of wish I had just bought Winter, the real fourth book of the series, but it’s not available as a paperback yet.

This book is a prequel to the first three books, and is told from the point of view of the main antagonist of the series, Levana. Fairest is much, much shorter than the rest of the series, at 222 pages (and those pages had larger font and fewer lines than in the other three books) compared to around 400+ for the rest of the series.

I went in hoping for another well structured novel set in the Lunar Chronicles universe with well written characters and a moving plot. I know Levana is the bad guy, but a novel from her point of view should at least give me the motivation for why she is such a horrible, evil queen and wants nothing more than to kill Cinder. Unlike the characters in books 1, 2, and 3, Levana and her sister Channary are pretty much evil from the beginning, and I guess I have strong hatred for flat, one-dimensional characters because this is what annoyed me the most about this book. There is never any explanation for why Channary is such a wretched person, but towards the end of the book you find out something happens to Levana at the age of six to make her the way she is. I kind of wish the author had Levana start out as a good, kind person and slowly turn evil as the book progresses so we can see some character progression and evolution into the evil person we know her to be. I just needed something so we could have a little sympathy for Levana. In comparison, the Hound in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire goes through something very, very similar to Levana’s childhood trauma, and ends up being a troubled but ultimately very sympathetic, well developed character, and I feel like I know him so much better than I know Levana, even though he is just minor part of ASOIAF while this whole book is about Levana. Just being “greedy for power” isn’t cutting it for me for motivation to kill a three year old. The rest of the book just seemed to be an excuse to name drop characters from the first three books which caused some major eye rolling from this reader. Overall, I was just disappointed by this book.

If you're a lover of a

Washington Irving was once a really popular American author. Now he's almost forgotten. Except in Granada, Spain. He lived in the famous site of the Alhambra almost 200 years ago and wrote of his experiences there. He was a great lover of stories, and he includes in the book some of the stories and legends he was told there, tales of ghostly happenings, warriors imprisoned in caves for hundreds of years, betrayals and successes of the rich and the poor.
If you ever plan to visit the Alhambra, do read this book. In Granada you can buy it in the original English, in Spanish, German, French and Italian. It's the perfect complement to this famous place.

Fascinating Stories

Washingrton Irving is a gifted writer who makes you feel like you are living in the 19th century in the Alhambra. I loved reading about this amazingly beautiful place that I had just visited. He made it come alive to me all over again.

Funny, informative, well-written

I bought a copy of this book at a gift shop at the Alhambra in fall 2010, read it on the train back from Granada. It was definitely a unique experience to read the book after visiting the setting itself.

Irving relates some very interesting stories of his own experiences including humourous character sketches and sweeping scenery descriptions. Don't read this book like a tour book... obviously Spain has changed immensely since the time of its writing. Irving also collects some very interesting legends of the Moorish/Arabic community from Andalusia. His tale of the Legend of Prince Ahmed Kamel could be turned into a Disney movie with just a few musical numbers thrown in for good measure.

Overall, a very enjoyable read!

About the Author
Roberto F. Aguilera is an adjunct research fellow at Curtin University, Australia, and an associate of Servipetrol Ltd, Canada. He has participated in numerous energy studies, including with the World Petroleum Council, US National Petroleum Council, and UN Expert Group on Resource Classification.

Marian Radetzki is Professor of Economics at Lule� University of Technology, Sweden. He has held visiting professorships at Colorado School of Mines, and at Pontificia Catholic University of Chile, researching on minerals and energy. In the 1970s, Professor Radetzki worked as Chief Economist at the International Copper Cartel, and has undertaken numerous consultancies over the years.

An impressive achievement

You couldn't ask for a better book about The Price of Oil. Be forewarned that this is a research-heavy book about the history of oil prices, the many factors that affect the price of oil, and predictions for the future (up to the year 2035) for the price of oil. The book isn't cheap, at $36, but for those who are motivated to learn more about the topic, from a historical or an investment standpoint, the purchase will be money well spent.

I'll caution you again the book is not for everybody. The paperback version is 242 pages, including index, but the information is dense. It is written like a long research paper, complete with numerous references. The authors communicate the results of their study in clear, readable fashion, but it may come across as dry to those accustomed to anecdotes, humorous asides, or anything of that nature. There are none here. The authors stay tightly focused on their ambitious goal.

The most challenging part of the book for the average reader will be the prediction methodology that is explained. Rather than just offer long-range predictions for oil prices, the authors explain how they arrived at these numbers. The methods were challenging for me to understand, but I believe with a second read, I could master the ideas, and perhaps even adopt the methods, using current or future data to make even better predictions, going forward. But being able to understand or adopt their predictive methods certainly is not necessary to enjoy or gain from reading the book.

The main point of the book is that oil is moving into an era of abundance, and a correspondingly low price, largely due to the advent of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") in the US. The authors touch upon many other topics, such as OPEC, government ownership of oil resources, the longevity of shale oil, climate concerns, environmental issues with fracking, and whether fracking will spread to the rest of the world (they believe it will). I also learned about many various things; the problems with transporting gas and oil by rail, the competitiveness of renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, how carbon emissions can be stored underground to prevent release into the atmosphere, the various ways electricity is generated, and so on.

The book is very current, with commentary about oil prices as recent as early 2015. The book has very specific, helpful information such as estimates on how much it costs to produce a barrel of oil in various parts of the world by conventional means or by fracking. At the time of this writing, the price of oil is below $30 a barrel. Is it even profitable to continue producing oil at these low prices? Will prices this low put a stop to fracking? This book is the place to find out.

If you are interested in learning about the history of oil prices, the many factors that influence it, and a view of the current situation, I strongly recommend this to you for purchase.

A very persuasive and easy-to-read book forecasting low oil prices for decades to come

This book is sure to be the talk of energy executives, investors, and academics around the globe as co-authors Roberto and Marian argue quite persuasively that the world is likely to see low oil prices for decades to come. (They give a forecast of $40-60 out to 2035!)

First, before you think this book is merely an extrapolation of the current trend of lower prices, it is important to point out that their forecasts were based on a multi-year analysis as oil was still trading around $100, long before its recent collapse, which started last year.

The authors explain that the twin technological revolutions of fracking and horizontal drilling, which allowed for a massive explosion in US oil production, will inevitably expand to the rest of the world. Given that the US only sits on a small fraction of total shale reserves (around 17%), ample supplies will be unlocked in countries like Russia, China, Australia, and elsewhere, which in some cases hold much larger deposits.

Also, the authors point out that fracking and horizontal drilling do not just unlock millions of previously inaccessible barrels of oil from shale, but from conventional oil deposits as well—something that many people don't realize.

Putting all the above together and the authors conclude that we are just in the beginning stages of a well supplied oil market for decades to come. This is a very interesting book covering all aspects of the oil market--peak oil, the Middle East, macroeconomics, geopolitics, the environment--and will be sure to make you think more deeply about such an important commodity.

Should be titled "RxJava Android Essentials", but still relevant

RxJava is a pretty new library and reactive programming altogether is only starting to get noticed. Although challenging to learn, I have found reactive programming to solve many problems I have struggled with, especially when it comes to managing mutability and state. It might sound like a bit of a hyperbole, but it may very well be the future.

Although the concepts of reactive programming were largely realized by the folks at Microsoft and implemented first into .NET, RxJava came about a few years ago when Netflix needed a better means to scale their services. They open-sourced the library on GitHub and it has started to get notice especially after Java 8 came out with lambdas.

That being said, this is a pretty good book if you feel overwhelmed by the online documentation, manifestos, and tutorials out there (I think I have read most of them). However, I was a bit disappointed this book was geared largely towards Android development. As someone primarily interested in JavaFX and BI applications, I found 1/4 of the content Android-specific and irrelevant. But the other 3/4 is relevant to any Java developer. I would have authored the Android stuff in its own chapter, rather than scattering it throughout the book.

About the Author
John Bercow is a keen tennis player, having first picked up a racket in 1971 at the age of eight. He instantly developed a deep passion for the sport, which has endured until this day. He played as a junior in north London until his late teens, and qualifi ed as a coach in the 1980s. Local Member of Parliament for the Buckingham constituency since 1997 and Speaker of the House of Commons since 2009, he still finds time to play recreationally when his schedule allows. He enjoys watching the major tournaments throughout the year on the television and, very occasionally, in person. He lives in London with his wife, Sally, and their three young children.

Great Introduction to Film Making

As an amateur just starting to get serious about turning my "home movies" into something people actually WANT to watch, I searched for a long time to find an introductory book that not only told you HOW to do things, but WHY you should do them.
After many disappointments, I found this book. While some of the references (script girl is particularly amusing) are very dated, the text mainly covers technique and avoids technology.
The illustrations and printing style point quite obviously to the book's mid-60s origin. An introduction by someone who remembers what it was like to shoot film in 1908 and knew D.W. Griffith personally should tip you off immediately that this book is something special. Still, the illustrations are clear and help illustrate the text's points very well.
In spite of what many recent amateur (and professional) film makers think, technology does not make your film good, it just makes it easy. TECHNIQUE makes it good. And that's what this book teaches in a very clear, readable, and understandable way.
Very highly recommended if you've had your fill of general introductory texts and are looking for real instruction and explanation for how to actually MAKE a film.

A stilll relivant clasic

While some of the references are somewhat dated the techniques this book promotes are still valid and useful. Some are now fashionable to flaunt like crossing views, but this makes some TV unwatchable because its jolting.

The concept to protecting shots seems to have been lost in the video world as an editor I find this much more useful that the so-called coverage junk that I often have to deal with. Reshooting exactly the same scene from the same POV 13 times is NOT useful coverage! The editor needs ways to cut around mistakes and build up scenes by mix and match to do this he needs well thought out shooting not endless repetitions.

If everyone who wants to be a director would read and pay attention to this book film and video quality would improve immensely!

While this book is an essential read for directors, DPs and cameramen; I would highly recommend it to gaffers, grip and sound guys.

I film youtube videos and wanted to learn more about cinematography. The book is about cinematography in a time when digital cameras and home studios didn't really exist. The book goes into great details about the basics of cinematography and skills that you can put into place immediately. The authors tone throughout the book is very conversational and I had a great time reading it. If you're new to cinematography I would start here first.

This conclusion was already that of Eratosthenes.
