This novel about a rogue shark that terrorizes a beach community hasn’t aged a day since its publication more than 35 years ago. Benchley’s writing is lean and efficient—this is his first novel, and also by far his best—and the story is a solid mixture of small-town politics, mystery, and outright terror. The author positions his protagonist, police chief Martin Brody, as virtually the lone voice of reason in a town filled with people who want to downplay the shark’s presence (so as not to scare away tourists with their bulging wallets); and when the body count starts to rise, it’s Brody who has to find a way to kill the beast, even if it means putting his own life on the line. The familiar characters—Brody, oceanographer Matt Hooper, shark-hunter Quint—are not as likable as they are in Steven Spielberg’s classic film adaptation, but in the context of the novel, they are well drawn and compelling. Those who are familiar with the movie, but not the book, are in for some surprises, and those who read the book way back when should definitely give it another look. --David Pitt

Pretty much a classic book that is different from the movie

I read this book over the winter break (actually I read it in a day while it rained outside) and I have to say that it was very entralling. Having seen the movie a dozen times over and never getting tired of it, I thought I'd check out the book because a friend told me that the book was different. How different? Well, let's just say that except for Quint (and even he's kind of different in the book) the main characters all seem very different from the characters in the movie. The Chief is not a NYC sophisticate, but is more of a former beat cop whose "dream" was to one day become chief of police in Amity. His wife is not as devoted as she is in the movie. Hooper the shark expert is also somewhat different and this book is interesting because the people are interesting, while the shark is sort of a looming natural threat like a hurricane or earthquake. The basic plot is similar as the washed up corpse of a girl is found on the beach, but then it totally veers off into a different story. And that's a good thing because it felt like I was reading an unpredictable book and not a retread of the movie. I probably would have stopped reading the book if it had been exactly the same as the movie because why bother if you know what's going to happen? I can see why this book was such a major blockbuster as it is quite fascinating to read. The knowledge about sharks does seem very dated (but then a quarter of a century will do that), but isn't that bad. I recommend this book because it is not like the movie in many ways and will surprise the reader and it's almost like a parallel world to the movie version which I appreciated.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN ...

It's easy to look down our nose at this book today and say it's not great but to do so is to totally ignore the perspective of WHEN it was written. In the early 70s, Jaws was totally original, totally fresh. The point of view from the shark had never been done before and to see it was exhilirating.

I agree with others who pooh-pooh this book for the cheap, soap opera-ish romance between Cooper and Brody's wife; even back then, this wasn't particularly well done, nor did it serve to advance the plot. That's why it was completely removed from the film version, so the movie could focus completely on how do we deal with the menacing shark.

Still, Jaws was and always be one of the great thrillers of all time - both as a book and a movie. Peter Benchely was a master who, ironically, ended up dedicating his life to shark preservation after villifying them with this book. How sad to learn of his passing earlier this year. But everyone should read Jaws! Book lovers and movie lovers alike; it gives us all a great sense of where the truly great stories come from.

A Different Kind Of Fish

Imagine it's 1975 and you're Peter Benchley. You've just published your first novel, a tale about a nasty shark that is an immediate success. Then along comes some guy named Speilberg, and suddenly its his "Jaws" everyone is talking about.

Talk about sharkbite. Ouch!

Making matters worse is that the book is very different from the movie, in many minor and a few major respects. People reading "Jaws" after seeing the movie may scratch their heads seeing the character Richard Dreyfuss played in the movie having a fling with Roy Scheider's wife, or how differently the final confrontation on the "Orca" turns out.

Steven Speilberg definitely improved upon it, but "Jaws" is still a good book, at times very much so. If you can set aside your memory of the movie and try to read this with fresh eyes, you will find yourself enjoying the book, and perhaps even feel, as I do, a little grateful it isn't just a novelization of what was on screen.

Speilberg had the best take on "Jaws" the novel when he said the characters in it are so unlikable he pulled for the shark. I think Benchley wanted exactly that effect. If so, he succeeds. The central character in the novel as in the film, Chief Brody, is lunkheaded if sympathetic. His wife, Ellen, feels shackled not because of the feminist urges then roiling the social scene but because she's a rich girl who married down and now has regrets about the Hampton cocktail soirees she passed up. The citizens of the town, named Amity perhaps ironically, are so cold-blooded they want the beaches kept open, shark or no, because otherwise they lose their summer trade. The mayor is in with the Mob.

As young people stretch out on the beach, Benchley describes the horny fantasies of the boys and their smug upper-middle-class satisfaction. "Privilege had been bred into them with genetic certainty," Benchley writes, before turning his attention to younger beachgoers with the scorn of a Puritan minister.

"The little children played in the sand at the water's edge, digging holes and flinging muck at each other, unconscious and uncaring of what they were and what they would become."

Nothing quite like a 20-foot Great White shark to knock the complacency from these sinful folk, maybe send a few to their early just desserts. Benchley sometimes presents this notion of the shark as instrument of divine judgment in a playful way, sometimes more seriously, but it lends an undercurrent to the story unique to the book.

Also unique to the book is Ellen's affair with Hooper the ichthyologist, which moves things quite afield from the shark hunt but has a good deal of suspense in its own right, as Ellen cold-bloodedly sets things in motion and worries more about the possibility of rejection then betraying the father of her three sons. Benchley here captures the social mores of the 1970s with Updikean ruthlessness, and perhaps suggests some of the preternatural reason for the shark's atypical presence off Long Island's southern coast.

Benchley doesn't catch every ball he tosses up, particularly with the mob subplot, and the final confrontation ends things on an abrupt and flat note. But he keeps you uneasily interested throughout, and his descriptions of the shark's attacks are especially well-written. The movie is better for its stronger focus and better humor, among other things, but Benchley's novel deserves credit for giving Speilberg's vision life, and for presenting an alternate fish tale you will enjoy reading, for its own sake as well as for comparison.

About the Author
Roger Kaufman is Professor Emeritus, Florida State University, and Director of Roger Kaufman & Associates. He is also Distinguished Research Professor at the Sonora Institute of Technology. His PhD is in communications from New York University. He consults with public and private organizations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and Europe. He is a Certified Performance Technologist and a Diplomate in School Psychology and a Fellow in Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He has been recognized by the ASTD for Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance. Dr. Kaufman has published 39 books and more than 256 articles on strategic planning, performance improvement, quality management and continuous improvement, needs assessment, management, and evaluation.

For over 40 years Jerry Herman has been creating landmarks in show-business history, shows like Hello, Dolly!, Mame, Mack and Mabel, and La Cage aux Folles. His music and lyrics for Broadway shows have won him Tony awards, Grammy awards, Gold Records, honors for best lyricist, and a Drama Desk award. He is the quintessential composer-lyricist. He lives in Hollywood, California.

About the Author
Andrew Dow was born into a railway family. After a first career in aviation, which later resulted in his book Pegasus - The Heart of the Harrier, he spent two years as Head of the National Railway Museum before joining British Railways as the privatisation effort started. He played a key role in the successful management buy-out that created Fastline Track Renewals, and he led the effort that resulted in Fastline acquiring and operating the first continuous-process track renewals machine in the country. He retired in 1999 and has since been writing, primarily on railways. He has also produced a number of DVDs on railway engineering and maintenance. During the course of research for this book he re-catalogued about half of the NRM permanent way collection.

The Pegasus detailed in facts and technique

This book can be simply described as "All that you wanted to know about the RR Pegasus".
It is a book that required a huge and wide research work indeed on the Hawker/BAE, RR and Bristol archives and generally speaking it is also a wonderful journey through the long and troubled history of the V/STOL flight.
Author Andrew Dow (known as George to all his RR's colleagues) worked for Bristol and then for Rolls Royce for near 30 years and this stands out clearly from the rich and detailed story of the people involved in the remarkable feat of design, develop and produce one of the most revolutionary engines in the aviation history.
His vision "from the inside" produced an authoritative and surely competent work but also a very readable one.
All the intricacies connected with the development of this remarkable engine (the one that made possible the only real operational and successful V/STOL combat aircraft in the form of the HARRIER and its derivatives AV-8B and SEA HARRIER) are told by Mr. Dow in a fact packed and dynamic history.
From the text it clearly appears that the secret for the HARRIER and PEGASUS success was an extremely competent and integrated team of well determined people, both in the Bristol/Rolls Royce team and the Hawker/BAE one.
The text illustrates the fascinating genesis of the engine from the cumbersome and odd "Gyroptere" project of Marcel Wibault that contained the seeds of the PEGASUS to the masterpiece of ingenuity designed by "the perfect team" represented by the two talented designers John Fozard (Hawker Siddeley) and Stanley George Hooker (Bristol and then Rolls Royce).
The Author then details the fascinating story of the "American HARRIER", since the P.1127 days to the definitive HARRIER both in the AV-8A and second generation AV-8B forms.
The B&W illustrations and drawings clearly illustrate all the details of this revolutionary engine, well integrating a truly "must have" book for all aviation enthusiast interested in the modern aviation. Strongly recommended

Absolutely OUTSTANDING effort on this engine - there's stuff in here for both the layman and the retired engineer!!

This is an outstanding effort written about, in my opinion, what is clearly the most unique turbine engine ever developed for an aircraft. John Farley is absolutely correct: The "heart" of any aircraft lies in its engine; the Pegasus is the absolute "King" of this concept! Without it, the Harrier, with it's unique performance parameters and abilities (such as "viffing" as an aerial maneuver), would not have existed. Without the brain-storming efforts of such visionaries as Fozard and Hooker, et al', this magnificant engine/airframe combination would never have come into existance - especially when it did! Imagine the outcome of the Falkland Islands War without the Sea Harrier?! An excellent book - bar none!! Simply magnificent...!!

I was impressed not only with the author's mastery of the material, but also the scope of his account - engineering, commercial, key personnel. must read if you are a planning to implement Oracle Applications on Exadata

Got this book over the holidays. This book is fantastically written keeping Applications in mind. Exadata has so many components, even the best of DBAs at times, find Exadata bit tricky. The author has done a great job - very succinctly written.

This book covers many topics related to running Applications on Exadata which are not covered anywhere, for example: the chapter leveraging Exadata features contains so many useful tips which are not documented anywhere. Sizing Exadata always used to be a secret, the author does full justice in explaining sizing in a lucid manner.

This book covers everything from Exadata basics to advanced topics like Consolidation, Resource Management, Monitoring, Administering, Backups and so on. The author has dedicated one section with sample commands for CellCLI which is really helpful.

This book is very well researched and well presented. I am very impressed the way this book is written, very much focused, to the point, covering everything about Exadata in an incredibly easy to read fashion.
This book is written keeping Applications in mind, It is a must for anyone who is planning to Implement Applications on Exadata. It has so many awesome tips and techniques of running Apps on Exadata which is not mentioned anywhere else.
The best part is this book is not at all bulky unlike other books which make reading scary. Those who are new to Exadata will find this book Extremely useful. It covers everything on Exadata.

Prestigious universities that have used these textbooks include Harvard University, Duke University, Carnegie-Mellon University, John Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, University of Georgia, Florida State University, San Franciso State University, and Wake Forest University. The Concepts version of this strategic-management textbook has been translated and published in Chinese, Japanese, Pharsi, Spanish, Indonesian, Indian, Thai, and Arabic, and is widely used across Asia and South America. He delivered the keynote speech at the twenty-first Annual Latin American Congress on Strategy hosted by the Centrum School of Business in Peru. Dr. David recently delivered an eight-hour Strategic Planning Workshop to the faculty at Pontificia Universidad Catolica Del in Lima, Peru, and an eight-hour Case Writing/Analyzing Workshop to the faculty at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah. He has received numerous awards, including FMU's Board of Trustees Research Scholar Award, and the university's Award for Excellence in Research given annually to the best faculty researcher on campus, and the Phil Carroll Advancement of Management Award, given annually by the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) to a management scholar for outstanding contributions in management research. Classic Lucado touching on a Crucial Topic

In the Christian book industry, Max Lucado has been a common name on a pretty regular basis when it comes to new releases. Apparently he is not slowing down in writing more and more great books. In keeping with his library of already released works, he has just released his newest book entitled simply "Grace".

As I picked up this book today (being familiar with other writings by Max Lucado) I expected smooth lines, well-crafted stories, and a poetic flow. I expected bite-sized chapters and devotional thoughts. But what I did not expect was to be emotionally stirred and wrapped up in this book! I guess you could say that I set out to read this with more of an academic mindset and yet this one cuts to the heart!

In chapter after chapter, you are going to forget what those plans were that had been at the top of your day's list. Instead, you'll probably finding yourself saying, "Just one more chapter". That's what I did...and I just finished the book! If we are supposed to be captivated by this idea of grace, Lucado has done a great job in conveying that to his audience. In my opinion, I believe Lucado did a much better job in this book of weaving illustrations and creative recreations of biblical events without going overboard as I sometime believe he has done in other works.

Reading through the book, as you make it to chapter 8, you will be cheering alongside Max Lucado as he defines grace triumphantly in these words, "Grace is simply another word for God's tumbling, rumbling reservoir of strength and protection. It comes at us not occasionally or miserly but constantly and aggressively, wave upon wave" (p. 99). As you begin chapter 9, you'll probably find yourself holding back your emotions as I did (I won't spoil the story) as Max once again skillfully weaves a story of the grace of God through, of all things, a wedding dress. I'm sure it was dust in my eyes anyway, right?

In chapter 10, you'll find hope in the fact that God's grace extends to you an adoption invitation! You'll take a step further in understanding grace as you grasp this idea that God chose us even though He knew our entire story! He didn't buy the lemon car with all of the surprises down the road. Instead, Lucado points out that God offers us salvation even while we are still sinners (Rom. 5:8). Lucado warms our hearts as he reminds us that we are adopted.

Well I won't walk through the whole book for you. That kind of steals the fun out of reading it. Instead, let me encourage to go and get this one. While you might wait a month and see if it goes on sale at your local retailer, it would still be worth it at full price! This one is going to lift your heart and your smile!

Note: I was also able to pick up the companion study guide and DVD at a local bookstore. For those interested in that, the DVD is simply Max retelling the chapters. So you might want to skip purchasing the DVD and simply read it yourself and then work through the companion study guide.

Lucado's latest is a must read for everyone.

Grace, what appears to be a simple 5 letter word is not that simple after all. We all think we know what it means, after all we certainly have heard about it in church, sung about it from the hymnal, even named some of our children after it. But do we really know what grace is. Do we really appreciate what grace does? Do we understand that grace is an unending, all encompassing gift from God? That is the challenge that Max Lucado takes on in his latest book, "Grace: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine."

Lucado starts his explanation of grace by stating:

"Grace is everything Jesus. Grace lives because he does, works because he works, and matters because he matters. He placed a term limit on sin and danced a victory jig in a graveyard. To be saved by grace is to be saved by him - not by an idea, doctrine, creed, or church membership, but by Jesus himself, who will sweep into heaven anyone who so much as gives him the nod.

Not in response to a finger snap, religious chant, or a secret handshake. Grace won't be stage-managed. I have no tips on how to get grace. Truth is, we don't get grace. But it sure can get us. Grace hugged the stink out of the prodigal and scared the hate out of Paul and pledges to do the same in us."

Throughout his book, Lucado mixes his descriptions and explanations of grace with stories of grace from the Bible and stories of grace in our lives today. We learn about grace through Boaz, the Turkey Lady, merit badges, a flight of doctors, a bridal shop owner, some dirty feet, and even a fifth grade Christmas party.

With these real life stories and events from the Bible that we all know so well, Lucado manages to stir emotion in his readers and allows us to understand how God has blessed and changed our lives with His grace. Earlier tonight I was discussing this book with my wife (who has also read the book) and I remarked that the neighbors would have thought me crazy as I rode the lawn mower, cutting the grass, with tears flowing down my cheeks. I was listening to the audio version of Grace as I worked in the yard. She commented to me that there were several times that she put the book down while sitting at the hospice house with her mother in order to not to get too teary eyed in front of her.

I have written many book reviews, both print and audio, over the past year. I have read many more books than I have actually reviewed, but I have not read a book that has impacted my life like Lucado's book has in a very long time. This book has stirred up such great emotion and challenged my thinking to the point that I have re-started this review tonight for the fifth time. It is not a hard book to read, nor is it a hard book to review. But it was such a significant book to me that I am having a hard time writing down the emotions that this book has stirred.

This book will touch your heart! That is the highest recommendation that I can give. It is a must read for everyone. You will notice that I usually say "this book is a good read for those who ..." Not this time. This book should be read by all. There is something in this book that will reach out and slap you across the face to get your attention. There is a story here just waiting to touch your heart and speak to you.

If you have always been curious about God's grace and what it means, read this book. If you have received God's grace and wondered how you managed to get so lucky, read this book. If you have ever wondered when God would realize who you really are and then the gig would be up, read this book. If you have ever wished you could check your grace account to see what your balance was before you were overdrawn, read this book.

I would give this book 5 of 5 stars and would recommend it to my friends and family to read. I would also like to note that in addition to the hardcopy of the book, I was also given the opportunity to review the unabridged audio book as well. The audio book is well produced and is narrated by Wayne Shepherd. The narrator has a great soothing quality about his voice that lends itself well to this book. It was easy to understand and I really enjoyed listening to the audio book as I worked about the house this weekend.

But do we really understand it? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response. When asked, "Do you believe in grace?" who could say no?
Max Lucado asks a deeper question: Have you been changed by grace? Shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Emboldened by grace? Softened by grace? Snatched by the nape of your neck and shaken to your senses by grace?
God's grace has a drenching about it. A wildness about it. A white-water, riptide, turn-you-upside-downness about it. Grace comes after you. It rewires you. From insecure to God secure. From regret riddled to better-because-of-it. From afraid to die to ready to fly.
Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off.
