Lindsay Buroker, just take all of my money.

If you've read through Book 8 of Emperor's Edge, devoured the short stories and novellas and "prequels," then of course you're going to want to read this book. It has a different feel (no Amaranthe POV, but she's still around) and there's tons of action (although it's a bit more confusing than usual). Like the Encrypted series (particularly Decrypted), we're taken outside of Turgonia to explore another country in the EE world. It seems like Buroker would be content to leave this world, but she just makes the world richer and adds more potential stories with each book. Now I need a Nuria book. Or a desert city-states book. Or anything. OR, come on, we need an "Akstyr Goes to Hogwarts" book. What's he up to on the Kyatt Islands? Trying to flirt (pathetically) with Starcrest's daughter? Getting strong armed into buying a surfboard from Elloil? Please don't make me write this fanfic.

My favorite part of the book was when the old gang could get together and do their thing. Teasing each other, cracking inside jokes. After this many books, I will still crack a smile at any mention of Maldynado's hats, Sicarius's meat bars, Amaranthe's explosions, and, of course, the character who is now the most hilarious of all...Sicarius. I'm glad we've had Sicarius's POV in previous books, because it's fun to imagine what's going on in his head when he whips out another fabulous comment. Speaking of Maldynado's hats, they deserve an Etsy shop. There's gotta be a crazy (but talented) EE fan who can whip up some of those hats.

Anyway, I'm loving the EE world post-Empire. And although I do want to keep exploring their world, I do miss the old days of our buddies concocting plans in their various hideouts. I feel a little sad that I can't imagine their homes now. Is that weird and sad? That's a little weird and sad.

An Okay Installment in a Truly Great Series

Siiiigh. Much as it pains me to give Diplomats and Fugitives only three stars, I have to be honest. Don't get me wrong. Reading this book gave me plenty of joy, but as a critic, however casual, I did find faults.

This novel is the latest installment in my favorite series of all time, The Emperor's Edge, written by Lindsay Buroker. The books center on a young law enforcement officer, Amaranthe Lockdon, as she unearths a conspiracy threatening her nation, the empire of Turgonia. Amaranthe has always wanted to earn distinction, but in trying to help her young emperor, she lands herself on wanted posters and in the crosshairs of powerful people. Still, determined to make a difference, she assembles and leads a team of talented misfits, devoted to helping the empire, one job at a time.

The first seven books in the series are narrated largely by Amaranthe, with other members of her team getting a turn now and then. This wonderful series officially ended with book seven, Forged in Blood II, but fan whining response led Buroker to write a massive follow up novel, Republic, which was narrated by Amaranthe and scores of other characters. Then, fans got their way again, and Buroker wrote this book, Diplomats and Fugitives. Instead of being narrated by Amaranthe, however, Diplomats and Fugititves is written from the point of view of Basilard and a new character.

The story starts off fantastically. We're introduced to Ashara, a Kendorian woman living in Turgonia, during her presentation for her business class featuring her start-up, Alpine Elixirs. The presentation goes hilariously awry, but things sober up when Ashara is approached by the Kendorian ambassador, who threatens Ashara's children. The ambassador forces Ashara to join a Turgonian research team traveling to Mangdoria in response to a worrisome fungal blight that puts the ecosystem in peril. On that research team are our old friends, Basilard, Maldynado, and Mahliki.

I loved seeing these characters again. It's funny, while watching movie sequels, I've always thought those self-aware nods to past installments and the overdramatic entrances of fan-favorite characters were lame. But I ate that stuff up in Diplomats and Fugitives. Buroker knows her characters are well-loved, and she's cinematic in her style of bringing them back to us.

"There's Maldynado," Mahliki said, nodding behind Basilard.
The sun wouldn't creep over the mountains for another half hour, so Basilard couldn't see Maldynado that well between the gaslights lining the driveway, but his silhouette was pronounced enough to show off a dark, bulbous shape on his head. Whatever Maldynado's latest hat was, it had the shape of a roasted turkey. A large one.

Bahahaha!

I was also overjoyed to see Amaranthe and Sicarius again. As employed agents now, they're up to their old tricks. I was enthralled by their every line of dialogue and my only complaint regarding them is that I wanted more.

Speaking of complaints, I did have problems with the book. Buroker's plots are starting to get a tad repetitious, which is understandable since she's a prolific writer, but I trust that she can come up with more original stuff. This plot, in particular, was highly reminiscent of Dark Currents, only not as good. Basilard and his research team spent far too much time traveling I thought, and their were two nearly identical chase scenes that happened back to back. I couldn't believe what I was reading... again!

Also, my attention started to falter in the second half of the book, when the character interactions and development thinned out. To compound that growing disinterest, Buroker separated the characters into different groups. She does that frequently and, as it always happens, one group's goings-on are always more interesting than the others, which makes it a pain when the narration leaps away from them.

All in all, while Diplomats and Fugitives was not everything I hoped it would be, I still enjoyed myself hugely. Even better, the ending sets off a probably spin-off featuring Amaranthe and Sicarius. (!!!) Thank you for the latest installment, Ms. Buroker!

Wish I had this book NINE years ago when I started homeschooling!

This book is just PACKED with information for the veteran homeschooler down to the family just beginning to consider the possibility of homeschooling.

One of the greatest things about this book is that each method of homeschooling represented has an introduction and two separate articles by two different authors. Not only did this format provide many different schools of thought presented in many different styles, this approach also gave such a rich view of each method that it made me wish I could do EVERY method... but then, again, I am the eclectic type and so I DO use many of these methods already!

I did wish that the very intense methods (i.e. The Principle Approach and Classical Education) would not have been listed first in the book because they were simply overwhelming. I think a new homeschooling might decide they could not do it and might not read any further. These methods were beautifully described, but I have to admit, my heart began to pound when I thought of how little Latin my children have been exposed to and how few hours we have spent on rhetoric and how many great classics we have still not read! If they had been placed after a few of the less structured methods... they would seem more approachable, I think. For instance, I would feel like I could handle some of the harder subjects if I could mix them with a style more like my own natural bent. I tend to mix Charlotte Mason, unit study, classical education and I use some workbooks, as well. Knowing more about the Principle Approach, I realized how much I agree with the concepts discussed and plan to adjust my style to reflect what I have learned!

I love the format of this book. I think Charlotte Mason would agree that its short, readable chapters lend themselves well to being fully understood in a one-sitting space of time without watering down the content or, conversely, fatiguing the mind.

On page 43 I think some of the scripture references listed were incorrect, but this book was otherwise flawless as far as I could see.

I found so much encouragement to help me on my own journey... especially the wonderful articles on homeschooling special needs children. Every article buoyed up my faith and my excitement at the wonderful gift God has given our family by allowing us the privelege of homeschooling our children!

My favorite quote from the book is by Christine M. Field (pg. 122):

"Let God work through your weaknesses. In his grace, he can accomplish what he wishes in your life and in your child's life. When we lay our burdens and the tasks that seem insurmountable at his feet, he opens the doors of opportunity and brings encouragers alongside as we navigate the path ahead."

This book definitely IS the opportunity, clearly expressed and the encourager to run along beside the overwhelmed homeschooling family. Thank-you to the authors and editors of this book for this well-compiled, beautifully written resource! I know it is a "keeper" and I will be recommending it often! :)

Good Overview from a Christian Perspective

This is a good overview of the various homeschooling methods. But it is entirely from a Christian perspective. There is nothing wrong with this, but this should have been mentioned on the cover. Neither the front nor back cover even mention Christianity, but all of the chapters discuss the importance of God and prayer, neither of which appeal to me as an atheist. But I still give this book 4 stars because it is the best available overview of homeschooling methods, and so it is probably the best place for anyone to start investigating homeschooling regardless of their religious beliefs.

About the Author

Dr. Marion Nestle is Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health and Professor of Sociology at New York University. Her degrees include a Ph.D. in molecular biology and an M.P.H. in public health nutrition, both from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1986-88, she was senior nutrition policy advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services and managing editor of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health. She has been a member of the FDA Food Advisory Committee and Science Board, the USDA/DHHS Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, and American Cancer Society committees that issue dietary guidelines for cancer prevention. She is also the author of Eat Drink Vote: An Illustrated Guide to Food Politics (Rodale, 2013), Why Calories Count: From Science to Politics (Berkeley, 2012), Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety (Berkeley, 2010), Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (Berkeley, 2007), which won awards from the Association for American Publishers and the James Beard Foundation; and What to Eat (North Point, 2006), which was named one of Amazon's top ten books of 2006. The Sweet Devil of Deception

Everybody likes sweet stuff. We are programmed to go for the sweetness. But not all the time, every day, in such concentrated high doses. Sugary drink companies have hijacked our common sense through outright lies, savvy advertising, and buying off our politicians and some unscrupulous scientists. This book presents the facts through historical timelines. It is shocking to see how Big Soda companies closely parallel that of death merchant tobacco companies. Read for yourself and protect you, your family, friends and loved ones from this sweet poison. Big Soda is clearly a Big Health destroyer...big time...

A very important book for those wishing to stay healthy

An excellent eye-opener that delves into how the Big Corporates like the Coca-Cola company "manage" the marketing of their products. Knowing well their products like the Coke are nothing more than sugared drinks with zero nutritional value and have serious harmful effects on humans, these companies have historically and systematically undermined the advice of groups promoting good health. The book is very well researched and makes abundantly clear how people are duped into buying products that are harmful to them. One such example being how the popular nutrition "experts" are co-opted into "soft-marketing" a company's products by equivocating about their harmful effects. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about being well-informed about their food habits and staying healthy over the course of their lives.

what a let down.

Keisha Ervin. I've had the pleasure of enjoying many of your books, mostly the older ones. TORN, CHYNA BLACK, GUNZ AND ROSES, PRIMA DONNA all of which I truly enjoyed, I also have HOLD YOU DOWN but I never read it don't know why. But what happened in Paper Heart? I honestly think you have been letting reality TV control your thoughts to much, because it leaked all over this book. The weird random mentions of Blac Chyna, Karrueche Tran and Kylie Jenner we so unnecessary and the obvious characteristics of Tamar Braxton were so annoying. First off when you mentioned Kylie, you said Scotland had a "Kylie" inspired face? I wanted to give you a piece of my mind so bad when since do black people inspire to look like white people? The last time I checked it's the other way around. I was disappointed in your perspective and how you choose to add that there. Then all the over board grey and pink hair do's? yuck. I'm so accustomed to you painting such vivid emotion ridden scenes and chic sexy but classy women, that make me want to think about my life differently or how it relates. Not to mention how predictable everything was. my goodness. Very unlike you Keisha. I don't get it. Her friend Ya Ya was overly ghetto and hateful. The reason I was able to get through it was because it was entertaining and it read like reality show. Literally! It was like an extended version of Love and Hip Hop. I want the keisha Ervin that knew how to build a beautiful character without the influence of reality stars and overly incorporating random personal thoughts and opinion of pop culture and it's celebrity.

A must have for collectors of Antique English Silver

This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Not as comprehensive as a lot of others I have seen which is actually a plus since it fits comfortably in your pocket when you go antiquing. I keep my copy next to my computer so I have it handy while surfing the silver listings on eBay. Well worth the price.

THE SUBTLE POWER OF SPIRITUAL ABUSE

This is an incredible book by Loving men of God to help those of us who have escaped being under mind control from religious groups; i haven't finished it yet, as some days, i can only read a few pages, as it's helping me to grieve the fact that though i was deceived and bewitched, it confirms that it was right to separate from this group. Anyone who is not sure if a group is cult-like or in reality, a cult, it will also help you to discern and see the signs of a particular group, and hopefully, not to get involved, because its a very painful process to go through.

Thanks so much, David and Jeff, for writing this book,this has helped me to realize that i have NOT lost my mind, which seems to be what the leaders want to happen. The flock comes under mind control and complete brainwashing by not having any understanding of what is written in this book. This book exposes so many nuances one would ordinarily not pay any attention to. Anyone who asks questions to the leadership about Doctrine or anything, including finances, is shunned by leadership. Then, if you leave the group setting, you are labeled 'divisive' aka, a division maker or in rebellion. Perhaps you will be ''marked and avoided" as disobedient to God because you are questioning God's Anointed Leaders who "'know so much more than you".. Perhaps you will be accused of losing your salvation or that you will lose your salvation, because you've not removed enough sin from your life. I know Jesus is grieved at the heirlings in the Church. Jesus Christ did not give us a spirit of fear, or condemnation, yet, many are walking around in just that.

For it is written, in the end times, even the very elect will be deceived, and that there will be wolves in sheep's clothing.....This book is for everyone who is suspicious or just wants to learn what to watch out for in a Church, the warning signs, and the red flags. If there is no accountability for pastors, where is a sheep to turn? Does your church or group use the "Don't Talk Rule", secrecy, and yes, even financial secrets where no one is to ask any questions, which is very dangerous.. Does your 'group' have accountability to another ministry or godly counsel? Do you get donation emails and requests at each service? Are you asked to give more volunteer hours than you ever expected? Are you completely exhausted and just feel you must keep serving and serving, because it's for God? Please get this book, it may save your life! This book will provide you with tools to strengthen your discernment and know when to walk away.

Any group that has nothing to hide will have a budget for the attendees to see freely, discussions about church business, and the like.(Right?) Or, is this reserved for 'behind closed doors' only available to the leadership? Do your church leaders preach the Truth, and, then, do they walk in it, to the best of their ability? Does some of the Doctrine come from commentaries of extra-Biblical material that other men wrote? When there are guests visiting, do they receive preferential treatment? Are your leaders working out their issues, as they help you work out your issues? IS THERE GOD'S LOVE present, or is that only for certain 'in' groups; If your leaders are not loving the flock, as The Father and Jesus Christ love their Beloved, I think that sitting under this can cause much confusion, and we know that God is NOT the author of confusion. Are there only certain 'anointed' ones? Perhaps this Scripture (and others) have been used to frighten you, that says, TOUCH NOT mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. There are many churches using this Scripture to intimidate the sheep. The Holy Bible says that we are ALL God's anointed!

I recommend this book to anyone who is in any kind of religious group, or thinking about becoming part of a group; the authors point out the signs and warnings to heed. God does not hold us to impossible standards, when we repent, HE is Faithful to forgive us. Saints, we must be sure to stay in forgiveness and then we can pray for the leaders and release them to God. Then, the atrocities committed and not repented for are between the leaders and God.

This little book explains all about the power the leaders have over the flock, and the employees; do the leaders serve the flock??? or only a 'special inner circle?' Are the attendees expected to give and give and 'keep in line' and not ask questions, and to serve the pastors? Even the sheep become deceived because we looked to leaders as:"safe'"people. This, my friends, we have realized, is Idolatry, and we have had to repent to God for that.

Do people of the body just quit calling you, because they were told not to speak with you? Perhaps they are told not to ask you why you have left, as obviously, if others 'knew' the truth, it would blow the group's 'cover'. We had to separate ourselves completely remembering we have freedom of thought.

The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse poses other questions, such as, do the leaders still talk about people who left years ago in a very unkind way? Could the leaders still have extreme Bitterness to the core, that keeps them bound to "WE ARE RIGHT, THEY ARE WRONG?' It is written, when bitterness comes it defiles everyone around. Do your pastor or pastors tell you who you can talk with, who you can have Bible study with, do they tell you, don't visit other ministries, because we are the only ones that are pure and Biblical? What would you think if the leaders position is, they don't believe in birth control for any family? Having multiple children have put people in poverty and then making it very difficult to leave the group.

Perhaps some of the sheep work there, and there are another set of rules for them. Because there is no disclosure of financial information, do you find a single mom with several children working there for minimum wage and having to get food stamps? Are there rules and regulations and 'protocols' that seem impossible to achieve? These are some of the many subtle things you might see; and much more.

We don't know how long healing will take, but thanks for prayers that God would send the right people into all our lives, and that we can trust that The Holy Spirit will reveal God's Word to us! It will be for God's Glory when we Overcome this spiritual abuse, and become stronger despite the wounding and broken hearts that we Trust God to Heal.

It is written, WOE UNTO THE PASTORS AND SHEPHERDS THAT SCATTER THEIR SHEEP, for GOD ALMIGHTY is on The Throne, and NOT any man or woman. (See Jeremiah 23 and Ezekial 34). and continue to pray for these people who have deceived themselves, in Jesus Name. Thanks for your prayers and draw closer to God,

Would be helpful for all Christians!

This book really helped validate our experience and our emotions. There is something so encouraging about reading your own thoughts in someone else's words to know you're not crazy! It explains what abuse it, how it happens, and addresses the recovery process. My husband and I just read it through once, highlighted a bunch, and want to go back to re-read and really digest certain parts. The end of the book addresses whether to stay or leave an abusive situation and that will be incredibly helpful for us in the next few months. I wish I would have read this book years ago, not only to possibly avoid the situation we're currently in, but to have a grace-based understanding of certain Scriptures and the overall message of the bible. While it will be hard to trust a church system again, we are so glad to have an understanding of what true spiritual authority is--a weight will be lifted off of us forever to know that it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with a title! And because it seems so many systems are unhealthy in the American church, it would benefit Christians in a healthy environment to understand the people who might flee to them for safety.

Must read, helpful guide to understanding and healing

Very helpful book, highly recommended. I was in a "denomination" dominated by spiritual abuse for forty years. This book has been an important part of the healing process for me. Highly gospel-centric. My only slight criticism is that some of the examples are egregious (though sadly real and more common than we want to think.) Don't get hung up on how gross the examples are. The principles of spiritual abuse (abuse of authority, legalism and performance-based religion, shaming and fear) still apply when the causes are more subtle. This book will help you see how the good news of Jesus Christ, His finished work on behalf of helpless sinners, the unearned forgiveness and new standing as beloved children of God, is the answer to spiritual abuse. I was especially impressed with chapters which help to understand how to avoid further abuse, and how to decide whether you should stay or leave an abusive situation. So grateful to God that He put me in a new church that is focused on the gospel of His grace, not on our performance.
