Shrinkage and Warpage

The author covers systematically the subject of shrinkage and warpage of plastic parts made by injection molding. First he defines both and lists factors causing them. In the next part of the book, he deals with controlling mold and post-mold shrinkage and warpage in a great detail, including troubleshooting. Another important topic covered is the computer-aided analysis (CAA). The author discusses the capabilities and limitations of CAA and its applications as a tool for predicting what will happen in the mold and to the molding. A considerable attention is given to case studies using ample illustrations and thorough analysis. One full chapter contains data, such as tables, charts and figures for different polymers unfilled and filled, effects of various process parameters, pressure volume temperature (PVT) curves for several major plastics, general shrinkage characteristics and comparative mold shrinkage values for a great number of plastic materials. There are two appendices, one containing conversion factors and equivalents, the other listing abbreviations, acronyms and material names. Glossary, references and bibliography are also included. The book will be a valuable addition to the library of those, who design parts, molds and processes as well as of those who run the production.

I found the answers to many problems that have plagued me over the years. An exciting and rewarding book at any price.

In japan, there are not books about warpage for injection molding.
So this book is very valuable for me.

This book uses simple expression,
But contents is comprehensive about warpage.

I enjoyed to read chapter 10 Case Studies
that is often occurred at my workplace.
I thought that even if countries are different,
the trouble and unexpected accident are the same.

But this is written by English, so I check 4 stars.

Hardcore New World Revisited

Back in the early '80s, probably 1982, my friend Paul Knorr handed me a novel and said something like, "Read this. You'll like it." I perused the cover, emblazoned with some fairly typical sci-fi soldier, and, humoring him, asked what it was about.
"It's about soldiers," he said. "They fight, then they have sex, then they do drugs, then they fight some more." Encouraging. Nonetheless, I accepted the book and read it. In short, War Games, by Karl Hansen and Kenneth Paul Rogers, is one of the most lurid, powerful works of science fiction I have ever read, a mutant cross between Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers, with a solid dose of S&M and narcotics abuse thrown in for good measure.
The 1981 novel was followed four years later by Dream Games, which was written by Hansen alone. War Games is far superior to Dream Games as a military science fiction novel. However, the latter book explores the workings of Hansen's universe in greater depth and provides answers to questions posed in the earlier work. Dream Games ends with a separatist invasion armada ringing Earth and preparing to launch a crushing attack -- bleak yes, but also inviting a sequel. A sequel that to date has not been forthcoming.
From a gaming point of view, especially that of role-playing, Hansen's books are ideal in that throughout them they describe a broad variety of weapons, armor, equipment, augmentations, and genetically manufactured races, and clearly delineate the socio-political and military environments his protagonists inhabit. Of course, the books are damned from a role-playing point of view, in that many parents would undoubtedly become upset if they knew just what sort of books their kid's new game was based on. (Remember all the flak D&D has gotten, especially in the '80s?) Nonetheless, those of us who have both read Hansen and played TSR's Star Frontiers cannot fail to notice uncanny similarities between the arsenals of the books and the game.
Since reading War Games and Dream Games, I have continued to search for other works by Karl Hansen, but from what I can tell he only wrote those two. I have always wondered what happened to him, and sometimes entertain the notion that the righteous citizens of whatever town he lived in decided that burning him in effigy just wouldn't be good enough ... To my knowledge, the only other thing Kenneth Paul Rogers has written is some true crime book (which I have not read) about a convicted rapist-murderer. Maybe that would shed some light on the whole Hansen-Rogers disappearing act. And maybe I don't want to know.

Richard Hooker... SURE he wrote it.

After "MASH" & "MASH Goes to Maine," Richard Hooker "took on a collaborator", William E. Butterworth, for a series of "MASH Goes to..." books.
The first two MASH books are basically collections of short stories with a very loose structure. The Butterworth books are sitcom novels... and not very good ones.
After the Butterworth series was played out, Hooker released "MASH Mania," which was a loosely structured series of short stories about the Swampmen in middle-age -- a rock-ribbed Republican middle-age, in fact, amazing though that may be to fans of the TV series, which Hooker hated. Although this book has politics opposite to my own, it's still funny and more importantly, Hooker WROTE IT.
From the completely different writing styles involved, I'd say that if Hooker ever even SAW what Butterworth wrote, it was to say, "Yeah, ok. I'll approve that."
I like Hooker's writing; so I felt rather manipulated by the Butterworth MASH books, which to my mind are Hooker's in name only.

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DIRECTORS OF LAST 2 DECADES. JAMES CAMERSON IS AN EGO MANIAC, PERFECTIONIST, WORKAHOLIC,SLAVE DRIVER. HE IS SELF CENTERED AND AROGANT. HE HAS HAD 4 MARRIAGES AND FAILED IN EACH. HE ALSO IS A TALENTED, SELF MOTIVATED, INTELLIGENT, AND CREATIVE PERSON. HE SEEMS TO STRIVE ON STRESS, PRESSURE, AND CHAOS. THIS BOOK CONTAINS MANY INTERESTING AND AMUSING TALES OF HIS DARK SIDE (MIJ). THE TELLING OF HIM GOING DOWN IN A MINI SUB TO DO SOME FILMING OF THE WRECKAGE OF THE TITANIC HIMSELF IS IN ITSELF A GREAT STORY. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES TO READ ABOUT BEHIND THE SCENES ABOUT MOVIE MAKING AND LIKES TO READ ABOUT GOSSIP CONCERNING SO CALLED HOLLYWOOD STARS. THE AUTHOR HAS A REALLY GOOD READ HERE.

If you like this director, overall, well worth a read

I picked up this book over the week-end, and finished it in a day. Being "unauthorized" it is actually a very well put together piece of work. The author has obviously used alot of reference material (he quotes Starlog alot) but reinforces this material with his own cast and crew interviews.
Unfortunately the sections on the films that preceed "The Abyss" are relatively light reads. The section on "Aliens" does however bring in some very interesting details about the production that I have never seen in print before...it does not however go quite far enough, I put it down wanting to know more.
Overall 3 out of 5...this book could have done more with the earlier period of this directors career.

A very interesting book to read.

Over my life the "unauthorized" biographies are usually books with sorted details of sex, drugs and other scandals. Those books are usually a real turnoff for me. However, Marc Shapiro has written a book that I found both fascinating and enlightening at the same time.
What Shapiro gives you is an inside look at the Filmmaker who is responsible for films like Titanic, The Terminator, True Lies and Terminator 2. Read and learn how Cameron got his start working for another film genius, Roger Corman.
While this book leaves you to ponder the question of whether or not Cameron was the power hungry, controlling and manipulating filmmaker some have claimed or is Cameron just another Hollywood Movie flake or possibly the film industry's greatest genius.
The quick and interesting read makes this book a real pleasure. If you like to read about how the movie industry moves and shakes than this book is one you'll want to add to your collection. Overall an excellent job and well worth the time to read!

Mystery better than Terror

This book includes nine tales of terror and six tales of mystery. It was written in 1923, four years before the last of the Sherlock Holmes books.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is obviously at his best at mystery rather than terror. Fortunately, the mystery stories tend to be the longer of the two.

The tales of mystery really do remind one of Sherlock Holmes. In one, one character states that if you have exhausted all the possibilities except one, that last remaining must be the truth no matter how farfetched it appears. In all the tales, he sets up mysteries that are solved in the Holmes style. Though not Holmes, some of the characters are quite interesting, and it is fun to try to figure out the answers to the mysteries.

Good short stories. I recommend this book, at least the mysteries section.

Great collection of suspense stories

I once owned this book, and I have been unable to find it. I remember reading this book from cover to cover; every story is unique and fascinating. My favorite is "The New Catacomb". I happen to love Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories more than Sherlock Holmes and this is the best collection I have found.

By our standards today these stories are not terrifying but the mystery ones are great. It is a quick and Doyle always produces and interesting story to keep you guessing.

Just the Facts

Having only a general knowledge of the ripper murders of the late 19th century, I was looking for a book that could fill in some of the details and distinguish between the known and the speculative. In this regards, the author succeeds. Mr. Rumbelow begins by giving us an overview of the East End in general and Whitechapel in particular since these are the areas in which the murders occurred. We learn about the population size, the number of poor, and other relevant socioeconomic facts. After this concise introduction to 1888 London and its environs, we move right into the murders themselves.

The author does a good job of distilling the facts associated with each of the five confirmed murders. We learn of the sad living conditions of the victims, their lowly states, and the brutality of their murders. We, of course, also learn a bit about Jack the Ripper along the way. The most definitive thing we learn is how he kills. To wit, he strangles his victims, puts them in a prone position, and then mutilates them with what is presumably a surgical knife of some kind. Somewhat surprisingly, it would seem that everything else that is related to the ripper lacks this kind of clarity. For example, although a general consensus exists that the killer had some anatomical knowledge and surgical skill, there is not complete unanimity by all that were involved in the case. Also, while newspapers and the police were flooded with letters claiming either to be the ripper or to know who he was, we know that only a couple of the letters are suspected to have actually come from the ripper himself. Do these letters, which were written in a coarse style, tell us the ripper was poorly educated or merely pretending to be so? If the former, then how does that square with the belief that the killer had anatomical and surgical skills? Could he have been a butcher of some kind? We just don't know and this book, unfortunately, can't tell us.

In addition to the murder details, we also learn of the intensive police investigation. The police were hamstrung at the time by the lack of scientific and forensic tools that we now possess. Remember that not only did DNA testing not exist; even blood typing had yet to make an appearance. Nonetheless, the police did what they could. Perhaps as a City of London policeman, Mr. Rumbelow is a bit biased, but he paints a picture of the police doing a competent job (informing the public, increasing patrols, setting traps, withholding key pieces of information, etc.) given the constraints they faced (e.g., territorial disputes between the city of London police and the Metropolitan police). However, this is not to say that no mistakes were made. One notable example is the Metropolitan police commissioner personally erasing a message that the ripper is believed to have scrawled on a wall for fear that anti-Jewish sentiment could spark a riot. While the message was written down, there is some question as to whether it was accurately transcribed. Had Sir Charles Warren been willing to wait just one hour more, a photograph could have been taken for later study.

It's really the second half of the book that falters and has given rise to my three star rating. Many pages are spent discussing seven suspects or so. While some discussion is warranted, the 100 pages seem excessive. This is especially so when you consider that we ultimately do not know the identity of the culprit and Mr. Rumbelow seems skeptical of the suspects that he presents. Additionally, the author spends a good deal of time discussing "ripper" murders that have occurred in the 20th century. The problem is that notwithstanding the fact that these killers may have been dubbed "rippers" by the press or public, they bear little resemblance to the 18th century East End killings. They may all have been serial killers, but the latter-day murderers did not confine themselves to one section of town, prey exclusively on prostitutes, or mutilate their victims in the way that the original ripper did. Taking all of this into consideration, the coverage of Jack the Stripper, the Dusseldorf Ripper, and the Yorkshire Ripper appears superfluous.

Despite the criticism, this is still a very good introduction to Jack the Ripper for those who have little or no knowledge of the specifics of the killings. This book was originally published in 1975 and the edition I read was from 1988. There are probably some Ripperologists who feel that a book of this vintage is outdated, but I'm not convinced we know much more now then we did twenty years ago. It's true that there have been those who claim to have discovered the identity of the real Jack the Ripper (notably Patricia Cornwell), but the suspects and a large portion of the evidence against them are included in this book and we still don't have any forensics to positively identify any person as the killer. Therefore, I recommend this book to those interested in the case, but I also caution that this is probably not a good read for the squeamish. Many of the killings are necessarily described in graphic fashion and there are even some morgue and crime scene photos.

Highly recommended as an introduction to the subject

This was not the very first book I ever read about Jack the Ripper but it is the first I purchased in the 30 odd books I currently own. I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time I read it and have re-read it several times ever since. Mr Rumbelow, an ex-London Police officer, has a very pleasant and entertaining writing style and he covers his chosen material very well.

There are certainly a lot of books in my collection that deal with the murders far more comprehensively and in more detail than in this fairly short work but that is part of the charm of the book and the reason that it is so eminently suited to persons approaching the subject for the first time. Rumbelow reviews the basic facts concerning the murders popularly attributed to Jack the Ripper, briefly identifies some of the main suspects, and introduces some of the other main players in the drama. There is not a wealth of detail concerning this witness or that, or an exhaustive review of forensic evidence, but Rumbelow efficiently covers the basics and allows the beginner to become familiar with the essentials.

Naturally, since the original edition is over thirty years old, it cannot cover some of the more recent developments on Ripper theory - the putative Maybrick diary or the Cornwell investigation, for example - but this in no way diminishes the value of the work. Rumbelow gives us a simple, down to earth review of the facts as they developed at the time and he explains the reasons why people believed what they did (and how they reacted) as those various facts came to light.

In addition to providing a fine overview of the essential elements of the case, Rumbelow also begins with a well-written and very sobering introduction to the East end of London in the late nineteenth century. He briefly examines serial killers both before and after the Ripper and takes a good look at the legacy of the Ripper murders in popular culture. He then reviews the major figures advanced s suspects up to the date of publication and explains why none can seriously be regarded as having been the Ripper. Ultimately, he quite reasonably concludes that the only thing we can really be sure of about Jack the Ripper is that he is dead...

If you are looking for a good introduction to the murders of Jack the Ripper you would be best to avoid books that claim to have *finally* solved the mystery, or advance this or that person as the only good candidate for the killer. My advice would be to start here instead.

A Book ONLY an Auditor Could Love.

I reviewed this book last summer and would love to adapt it into my classes, but I know that my students would NEVER read this. This book is littered with important and insightful tidbits of information. At least 100 times I stopped and said "wow, I never thought of it that way." The fact that I kept falling asleep while reading the book reflects more on the American reader's need for bright flashing lights and inability to process the dry, than the quality of the material. I'm sad that I've become someone who need pictures and graphs and captions and text and even occasional bold type in order to enjoy a well written, well researched tome. I'm also disappointed that this book doesn't show up at IIA events, isn't well known in academic circles, and most book reps don't seem to know about it. Overall I would call this required reading for auditing instructors, audit nerds, and people who love dry British literature. If he ever comes out with a dumbed down version with end of chapter questions, mini-cases and a test bank then I'm using this book because it is far superior to the competition. 1,000% better than Herman Melville even without the whale.

Informative for beginners

As an auditor, this book is an extremely useful guide with references directly linked from the IIA standards. Unlike the terms and explanations used by traditional books, it presents some different landscape of outlook to easily understand important concepts behind internal auditing. The book also reflects contemporary issues with hints of relevant historical events and it clearly emphasized the areas auditors should have focus and be aligned with to bring more value to businesses and organizations. However, illustrative models made by the author are a bit confusing and most of the time do not relate in some degree of sense to the author's explanation. But definitely, a recommended book for beginning practitioners.

About the Author

Neal P. Mero is Assistant Professor of Management at the University of Mississippi. He is the co-author with Henry L. Tosi and John R. Rizzo of Managing Organizational Behavior (Blackwell Publishing, Fourth Edition, 2000). He has won several teaching awards and consulted for numerous government and private organizations in areas of organizational behavior and human resource management.

Henry L. Tosi is McGriff Professor of Management at the University of Florida. The founding editor of The Leadership Quarterly, Tosi has served on various editorial review boards, authored over 60 journal articles, and held several positions within the Academy of Management. He is the co-author with Neal P. Mero and John R. Rizzo of Managing Organizational Behavior (Blackwell Publishing, Fourth Edition, 2000).
