Global Wanderings & Inane Wonderings: A Midlife Gap Year, by Elizabeth J Clark, Lynne Atkins

-In the midst of two successful and promising careers Lynne Atkins and Liz Clark took the final step in bringing their travel dreams to fruition. It followed years of hoping and dreaming, dreaming of faraway places and exotic destinations. Within each of them was a longing for not only adventure but for understanding. Understanding of the nature of humankind and the expansion of civilization, of spiritual mysteries and their individual place in the world.
-After a surge in the Real Estate market they bravely sold their home. It felt like they had just won the lottery and they were determined to treat it as such! Excitedly both Lynne and Liz quit their jobs, sold their cars and household belongings and with a spring in their steps purchased two "Round the World" tickets! It would be a grand undertaking that would last one year, which they spent two days planning. They purchased backpacks which were promptly filled with clothes and supplies to see them through diverse weather conditions and a multitude of situations. With all momentum (and no responsibility) these daring forty-somethings set off on a trip of a lifetime!-Where were they going? How would they get around? This all became part of the comedy and the adventure. With nothing but a rough outline of flights and a fleetingly glanced at guidebook the rest they would have to make up as they went along.-Join them on their adventurous journey traveling through approximately fifty countries and all seven continents. Lose yourself in a commentary filled with historical and hysterical information. Experience the panic as they are nearly kidnapped in Bolivia. Feel the exhilaration and exhaustion of climbing Machu Picchu. Ride along on an impressive Christmas Antarctic voyage. Experience the wonders of nature in the Galapagos and Ballestas Islands. Step through history into the ancient cultures of Rome and Egypt. Sense the trepidation of walking with lions on Safari in Zimbabwe. Discover the mysteries of the Hill Tribes of the Golden Triangle.-But wait.... there's more.... much, much more for the armchair travel/adventure reader. With Liz journaling their daily antics and Lynne's guidance, photos and sarcasm you will soon become part of the adventure.------------------------------Complete with photos and maps so you can follow their journey!-------------------------------An excerpt from one professional critique stated... "I described this guide to someone who immediately said it sounded like 'Eat, Pray, Love', which was also one of my first thoughts. I think this manuscript is much more fun to read, though."-------------------------------Another stated... "Global Wanderings & Inane Wonderings" recounts the inspiring journey of two adventuresome travelers; creating worldwide appeal due to the varied locations, unique destinations, and diverse cultural interactions. GWIW is a very exciting and humorous book with mass appeal.-------------------------------**GWIW is a zesty journey filled with a continual quest for unique encounters, as the two main characters, chase not only spiritual enlightenment but their dream of seeing as much of the world as possible in one year. This is not a leisurely walk but a roller coaster ride of excitement.**

About the Author
Armed with a degree in Behavioral Sciences, American, Liz Clark, spent ten years working with kids in a locked psychiatric ward which gave her an interestingly twisted perspective on things. She warped her views even further by working eight years in the Juvenile Detention Center in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Currently, she works as a Service Coordinator for young children with disabilities. With a youthful enthusiasm and chronically positive outlook, her personality is made apparent in her writing style. Not one to shy away from public speaking or a good chat, her storytelling skills outrage and delight both verbally and in script. Trusty sidekick/butt of most jokes: Australian, Lynne Atkins, an artistic Sign writer by trade, has been a business owner, teacher, manager and a personal assistant. Lynne brings to the mix the organizational ability and finely tuned talents of a taskmaster. With her skills as an accomplished map-reader, an internal GPS system (which, she credits to a past life as the Captain on the historic Pinta), and her eye for photography she was able to navigate their way around the world while capturing it in the lens. Having met in the year 2000 Liz and Lynne have since traveled to over 65 countries and all 7 continents. Between these two, a plethora of adventure, banter, and general shenanigans are never far behind.

I was exhausted when I finished this book! It usually takes me a long time to read a book - and I read it in 2 days and I NEVER read a book in 2 days. I felt like I was right there with these girls on their trip - so many times! And I just could NOT believe how brave they were! I cannot wait to see what the next adventure is for these two girls! Loved it!

A lot of complaining from what sounds like ignorant privileged people
By Kindle Customer
A lot of complaining from what sounds like ignorant privileged people. I think towards the end of the book when you mentioned how you had grown and were forever changed by this experience you should have shared examples or how you planned to live your life differently. I also couldn't get over the "Catacombs of Paris" incident. Very embarrassing and disrespectful. You can imagine why some people are not to welcoming to tourists.

Can love be hidden like a tattoo placed where no one can see it?
By Mary Gramlich
Honor Gillette has to make a split-second decision that will save her and her four year old daughter from Lee Coburn an accused mass murderer. He says he is a victim of circumstance but Honor's only concern is their safety and what he plans to do with the gun pointed at her head. Coburn's mission is to absolve himself of the crimes he did not commit and find something hidden in Honor's house.

Whatever is driving Coburn to tear her house apart and terrorize her is nothing she knows anything about. Her late husband did not leave anything worth killing for and his death was accidental but Coburn begs to differ on all her accounts including the details she believes to be true about her late husband. As time goes by and more people wind up dead she starts to wonder who is telling the truth and who is pretending to.

Coburn has both saved Honor and terrorized her, yet as Honor asks questions his answers begin to make more sense about what he is doing. Going on the run was never on anyone's to do list but staying ahead of the local authorities and the FBI is a challenge she is showing she is up for and proving she is worth the risk Coburn is taking by keeping her with him.

As more people become involved in the manhunt for them, Coburn and Honor tear across the state in search of the key to unlock the secrets with absolutely no idea what they are looking for. The place they keep landing is her father in law's house and it is time for a showdown with him. Coburn believes the hunt for answers began there and will end there one way or another even if it involves tearing apart childhood dreams and momentos. But will Honor be able to protect her husband's reputation or is she helping Coburn prove him to be a dirty cop.

Meetings are set up, shots are fired, cars explode and the person behind Coburn believes is behind everything the elusive "Bookkeeper" is still lurking in the shadows. The mysterious "Bookkeeper" can't be found or identified but has been sending out the orders and running this nightmare organization from burn phones and secured emails.

Sandra Brown has proven year after year the incredible ability she has to write thrillers that draw you in and take you on a adventure. But this book far exceeds any in the past as it keeps you guessing as to who is the shadow boss, where is the key to the answers, and what is the motive behind all of this. Unbelievable barely scratches the surface of how great this book and when it all comes together you find yourself gasping with unexpected revelations. The only downside is Ms. Brown apparently likes to tease her fans with cliffhangers - which you have to read to understand.

Disappointing ending
By Dalmatian mom
Excellent story, grabs your interest at the beginning. The "bad" guy is almost likeable from the start and the likeability grows. The main characters were all interesting and seemed well rounded, but beyond that you get dumped into a new chapter or section with another person and might not get back to the main characters for a while. There are a lot of extras in the book. Lots of surprises. I would have preferred a little more romance, but I wasn't upset about how little we got -- maybe because there was so much of Lee's thinking to take your mind off of it. However, I was so disappointed in the ending. All I can say is I need another book with either these characters or a book where they are prominent so that I can have the ending I would have expected. I honestly wondered if my book was missing pages when I remembered I was reading on the Kindle! Except for the occasional unnecessary violence that pops up in Ms. Brown's books, I love everything about her writing and stories. Mirror Image and Charade are the two that I recommend to anyone who hasn't read her books. I look forward to her books and I'm always satisfied with the mystery, the amount of suspense, and the romance -- always a good mix. Lethal just didn't have what I would call a complete ending -- I know what I think Ms. Brown wants us to think, but I would have liked two more paragraphs, two more pages, something.

Not what I expected.
By Nikki W.
think this was the first Sandra Brown novel that I didn't absolutely race through holding my breath. Instead, I found myself a bit bored.

On the run for killing 7 men in a warehouse, Lee Coburn is on the run. He runs straight to Honor's house. Honor will do anything to protect her daughter Emily, so she allows Coburn into her house and even helps him search for something he say's her husband was hiding.

I have to say I usually feel a connection with the characters and I was expecting the same thing from this novel but it didn't feel the same. Something seemed a bit off.

There was plenty of action and lots of guesswork. I was kept guessing until the end and still wasn't sure even after the unexciting reveal of The Bookkeeper. One thing it wasn't was predictable. Which is always a positive thing in my opinion.

One thing it lacked for me was the romance that I am so used to in Sandra's books. I didn't feel the passion or the connection between them. Not to mention the ending lacked a bit of everything for me. There was no closure for me at all. I know some people won't mind the ending the way it was but I just can't stand leaving things up to me. Of course I could probably work through some things but I don't want to have to.

As I've said, Sandra is one of my favorite authors and one I look forward to every time a new book comes out. This one, however, was just alright for me.

"For anyone who aspires to a position of national leadership, no matter the circumstances of his or her birth, this book should be mandatory reading. And anyone who feels a need, as a confused former prisoner of war once felt the need, for insights into how a great and good nation can lose a war and see its worthy purposes and principles destroyed by self-delusion can do no better than to read and reread David Halberstam’s The Best and the Brightest."

From the Publisher
The Vietnam War has seemed more shadowy and cinematic to me than anything else for most of my life. I was born during the Watergate Hearings. My generation was touched by the war in Vietnam, but only in the sense that our parents were part of it--whether they marched for peace or served in the military or fell somewhere in between. But unlike the Baby Boomers, we are not defined by the war--it, literally and figuratively, did not make us. So, as a consequence, when I think of the Vietnam War it is the images that the generations before me created that come to mind--Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon...

When I read The Best and the Brightest, that all changed. For the first time, I understood. No matter what your position may have been or may be, this book fully and expertly explores the American foreign policy decisions and actions that led to this war and its execution and paints a clear picture of its catalytic role in the shaping of today's America.

Recommended reading concerning Vietnam
By PapaPhil
This is the seminal work relating to how we got ourselves immersed in Vietnam. I'm a Vietnam Veteran, and I have always thought our reasons for being there were misguided at best. In this exhaustive look at the gradual build-up to the maximum troop levels in 1969, it is apparent that our reasons were much less than misguided. It makes me angry that many good people died in this war, this senseless, stupid exercise of power gone awry. It is very sad not only that the Vietnam War occurred, it is very apparent that we fail to learn from the lessons of history (read: Iraq and Afghanistan).

"The Best and the Brightest" is an excellent work, deserving of the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Mr. Halberstam.

A must-read for anyone who is interested in the Vietnam War.
By Don G. Schley
This is an exceptionally well-written book about the way John F. Kennedy's idealistically selected cabinet dragged us down the muddy, dirty, twisted road and into the Vietnam conflagration. Nowhere, save in McMaster's more recent treatment (Dereliction of Duty, 1996) is the critical role of Robert S. McNamara in this debacle, so critically or accurately portrayed. Halberstam treats a number of critical subplots, too, such as the destruction of the "flexible response advocates" among the junior officer corps by Eisenhower's Secretary of Defense, the lamentable "Engine Charlie" Wilson, or the enmity between distinguished paratroop commanders Maxwell Taylor and James Gavin, or LBJ's complete consternation with Kennedy's Undersecretary of State for Southeast Asia, the decorated veteran of Merrill's Marauders and the OSS, Roger Hilsman (arguably the only man in the administration who knew anything at all about Southeast Asia in General and Vietnam in particular). An added value of Halberstam's treatment comes in the form of his detailed, insightful and assiduous character studies of all the principals, from nominal Republican McGeorge Bundy, the only non-PhD ever to serve as Harvard's Dean of the Undergraduate school, to Secretary of State Dean Rusk, intellectually despised by his mentor, Dean Acheson. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in both the Kennedy administration and in the question of how we got snookered into this impossible war in the first place.

Even though I voluntarily served in Vietnam, I was sadly ignorant of my purpose, which was basically cannon fodder for the United States' military-industrial complex. My eyes were opened by the incredible waste of money and systematic destruction of a country I witnessed while there. But I remained basically uninformed about the politics that sent me half way round the world. For anyone who still is interested in that story, "The Best and the Brightest" is a must read.

E. M. Forster (The Works of Lionel Trilling), by Lionel Trilling

E.M. FORSTER by Lionel Trilling When an eminent American scholar and critic takes as subject for a literary analysis a notable English author a reader can expect a tasty feast for the mind. Trilling does not disappoint. This brief but erudite book is now over half a century old. It still remains an admirable introduction to E.M. Forster whose five novels have become an esteemed part of the western cannon. "In America Forster has never established a great reputation." Trilling's comment implies the reason for his study of Forster. And indeed, it is this work that is credited with correcting that oversight. Lionel Trilling's evaluation meets the criteria for excellent criticism. It is impartial in that although overall it praises, it notes faults. "The quaint, the facetious and the chatty sink his literary criticism below its proper level . . . they even touch, though they never actually harm, the five novels . . . " The second criteria, the enlightenment of potential readers as to an author's intentions and techniques, is likewise amply met. All of Forster's novels are discussed. Many illuminating insights are provided. Forster's short stories are summarily treated. Trilling evidently did not consider short fiction Forster's forte. Lastly, a critic should provide in praise as well as admonition comments that might assist authors to create better works. In this Trilling is at a disadvantage since Forster after the publication of PASSAGE TO INDIA in 1924 completely forsook novel writing. Too bad. Trilling is good medicine for an author. A caution: the book is aimed at an academic audience. Allusions are made to various other significant authors as in "Forster is not taken in by his Gino as Santayana is by his analogous Mario . . . " Georges Santayana a prominent American philosopher wrote only one novel THE LAST PURITAN in which Mario is a key character. A college degree is not necessarily needed to follow Trilling's discussion.

Critical Longevity
By reading man
This study of E.M. Forster was written during WWII, but it's still one of the best critical books about him. Some might say that Trilling's introductory chapter is a trial run of the thesis of his later LIBERAL IMAGINATION, but I think what he writes actually applies to Forster and isn't just Trilling's King Charles' Head.

One caveat: Trilling apparently wasn't aware that Forster was homosexual when he wrote the book, which isn't surprising since few general readers or literary people, excepting Forster's friends and associates, knew. It doesn't seem to make any difference, which is a point worth pondering by homophobes.

I don't agree with Trilling that HOWARD'S END is Forster's best novel, but I also disagree with him about the readability of THE PRINCESS CASAMASSIMA and his ancestor worship of Freud, which has no bearing on my belief that he was the greatest American literary critic of his time (apologies to Edmund Wilson).

Seven Dead Pirates, by Linda Bailey

Lewis Dearborn is a lonely, anxious, "terminally shy" boy of eleven when his great-grandfather passes away and leaves Lewis's family with his decaying seaside mansion. Lewis is initially delighted with his new bedroom, a secluded tower in a remote part of the house. Then he discovers that it's already occupied -- by the ghosts of seven dead pirates. Worse, the ghosts expect him to help them re-take their ship, now restored and on display in a local museum, so they can make their way to Libertalia, a legendary pirate utopia. The only problem is that this motley crew hasn't left the house in almost two hundred years and is terrified of going outside. As Lewis warily sets out to assist his new roommates -- a raucous, unruly bunch who exhibit a strange delight in thrift-store fashions and a thirst for storybooks -- he begins to open himself to the possibilities of friendship, passion and joie de vivre and finds the courage to speak up.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—There is little joy in lonely Lewis Dearborn's young life. He's the only child to older, overprotective parents, shy to the point of becoming selectively mute at school, and friendless. One bright spot is his relationship with his eccentric great-grandfather, who lives in Shornway, a run-down mansion by the sea. When his great-grandfather dies, Lewis and his parents move into the ramshackle estate. He chooses the tower bedroom, with its ocean views, old toys, and creaky floorboards. He is thrilled with the room despite the fact that the middle window won't stay shut even if he latches it; there's a slightly fishy odor; and there are noises, which are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. In a hilariously cinematic scene, Lewis discovers that he has roommates—seven dead pirates who have been waiting for him. They want Lewis to help them navigate the terrifying roads filled with cars to the local museum so that they can retake their ship and sail to Libertalia, a pirate utopia. But first he needs to read aloud to them. This rollicking tale moves apace with a vivid setting, surprising depth, great humor, and memorable characters. Readers will root for Lewis as he finds his sea legs and the courage to make friends, both spectral and human. VERDICT Ahoy, ye maties: don't miss this treasure of a middle grade yarn.—Brenda Kahn, Tenakill Middle School, Closter, NJ

Love Pirates? Read this book! Captain's Orders...
By R.P. Blotzer
Lewis thinks his great grandpa is pretty cool. So what if he talks to himself shouting at shadows as if they are real people? His parents think Grandpa's just senile and should be put in a home for his own good, but Lewis doesn't want to see the old man forced from his home he loves so much. It is then on Grandpa's 101st birthday, that he whispers an odd phrase for Lewis only to hear... Libertalia. The next day Great Grandpa is gone and with him any way of solving this odd name. From ghost pirates to a unique inheritance, Seven Dead Pirates is a perfect book for boys and girls alike.

Lewis and the cast of pirate ghosts fill these pages with adventure and fun, with fantastic high jinks and a thrilling 'rescue' mission from a Moo-see-um. Characters such as the mighty Captain Crawley and Adam the ship's boy, the mystery and well researched pirate lingo makes this book great for kids who might have trouble reading other books. Ms. Bailey works in her details with the plot making sure to keep the reader interested, instead of bogged down with lengthy passages.

I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me a great deal of the How To Train Your Dragon books and would be very good for parents with young boys. With its boyish humor (ghosts that are falling apart and sea worthy language), it would hold attention where some of the more serious novels do not. It's humorous, but also a well versed adventure where a young boy heads out to save a group of pirates and learns a little bit about himself in the process.

Batten Down the Hatches, Mate... and read this Book!!

Spooky Pirate Fun for Halloween
By Annette Lamb
SEVEN DEAD PIRATES by Linda Bailey is a humorous paranormal adventure about a boy who helps a gaggle of ghosts retake their pirate ship from a local museum.

After Lewis’s great grandfather dies, the shy eleven-year-old and his family moves into his great-grandfather’s creepy seaside mansion. Lewis soon discovers that the ghosts of seven pirates live in the secluded tower that’s now his bedroom. These spooky characters aren’t interested in haunting. Instead, they want to steal their pirate ship from the history museum and set sail for the pirate utopia known as Libertalia.

Perfect for a Halloween month read-aloud, this middle grades fantasy is full of paranormal fun and emerging friendships. Children will easily empathize with Lewis and his motley crew of apparitions. This book will quickly become a popular part of the library’s Halloween book display.

Librarians will also find the book to be a great focal point for a pirate themed event. Need ideas? Go to the Talk Like a Pirate website at http://www.talklikeapirate.com.

GHOST PIRATES!
By Jessiqa
GHOST. PIRATES.

If that doesn’t catch yer interest, there may be no hope for ye. (I’d try to do the whole review in Pirate-speak, but I’d fail miserably. More’s the shame.) Anyhoo, this book is delightful. It’s a bout a boy named Lewis whose family inherits an old mansion that’s haunted by pirates who expect Lewis to help them retrieve their ships currently residing in the local museum. Along the way, he reads Peter Pan to them (only the Hook parts) and finds the courage to address bullies at his school.

Pick up th’book, or forever a landlubber ye be!
