"Go governance, go early" remains the rallying cry of savvy enterprise and solution architects who are chartered with the setting the scope and direction of their enterprise's data integration programs -- even more so now with the cresting requirement for "big data" integration. Understanding the scope, diversity and integration challenges associated with the governance of big data is tremendously challenging.

Sunil Soares' latest book represents a Rosetta Stone for IT professionals to map their portfolio of traditional IT experiences (master data management, data governance, et al) to the newest data technology trends of "big data" and "big data analytics". Specifically, among other benefits, it provides a much appreciated reference architecture for big data as well as case studies illustrating the business outcomes from big data analytics.

Clearly, in our practice experience, big data requires both master data management (MDM) and data governance to be effective and sustainable. Through 2013-14, big data will repatriate itself into the MDM fabric as yet another source. I absolutely loved this book. The book is really structured around the principles that one needs to govern big data. Once author establishes the framework he gets into the best practices of each discipline in the framework. It does not talk about how to implement big data governance but I guess that should come if you have already data governance running. If you are in the data governance then this is a must read.

Wait for the "Full Color Inside" version before buying

While I do the majority of my reading in eBook format these days, some things, like a 900 page reference manual, are just better in physical form. Since I had the last edition, which was black and white, I eagerly ordered this updated one, which boldly proclaims that it is "Full Color on Inside". It even shows a color panel on the cover.

The book is entirely black and white. The screenshots are all grey. The code listings are hard to read, because they're syntax colored but printed in grayscale. The 3D section (not to mention the color drawing sections) are particularly hurt by this, but its the dithered, grayscale source code that's the most frustrating. Once you're used to syntax coloring in the modern dev environments we all use you really miss it when it's gone.

I have no idea what went wrong with this, but if it was an error at the printer, they should have burned the batch and reprinted them. Let's face it, on a $50.00 book the print cost is only a fraction of it (if USA Today can do it for 50 cents), and the publisher really should have stepped up and fixed this. I feel sorry for the author (MacDonald) because a work like this was clearly a monumental effort, only to be ruined by either a mistake or an ill-advised cost cutting decision.

I really hope I can get my hands on a full color version of this. I'll be glad to update this review at that time. I'm operating under the assumption this was a production error and that future printings will be fixed. If their "fix" is simply remove the color claim from the cover, it'll be a 3-star book. If it comes out in color, a full 5-star. For now, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

[Later Edit - I see the current image for the cover on Amazon has removed the "full color" claim, so their fix was apparently to change the cover, not fix the book].

Mr. McDonald is one of my favorite computer-book writers. His approach is usually quite methodical and natural. This book in particular is very easy to understand and brings your Silverlight programming knowledge up a level.

Thorough, in-depth coverage of analog filters

You will be an analog filter master if you can learn all the information in this book. It's a solid expansion of the classic Van Valkenburg text.

Pros:
-Extends the original text with topics more useful for integrated circuit design, like transconductance-capacitor filters. It doesn't go into transistor level design though, you'll need to find another text for that.
-Detailed, mathematical treatment of filter design. This is a different approach than say, Don Lancaster's Active Filter Cookbook. It's not a text you should use if you need to bang out a design quickly; rather, you should study this text if you want a deep understanding of how filters work.

Cons:
-It's really obvious where the new authors have added or modified material from the original 1984 text. You can do a side-by-side comparison of the two editions and for the most part, the core material is the same. However, at the parts that have been modified, the writing style differs greatly. Van Valkenburg's writing is very succinct, but not in a way that leaves you feeling like you've missed something. The new authors are more wordy, which some people may like. Personally I find it distracting.
-The publisher didn't seem to pay much attention to typesetting. I think this is one of the ugliest typeset textbooks I own. The fonts, the layout, the figures, and even where the figures are laid out in relation to the content is very haphazard. The original '84 text was more elegantly laid out, and was thus much easier on the eyes.
-No solutions manual is available. A couple chapters are available on the newest author's website.

Overall, a solid textbook if you're interested in the math and theory behind filter design. I believe that you should use this in conjunction with a more practical filter book (like one of the cookbooks) so you get both sides of the story.

The color was a little off and I don't quite understand why to this very day, but it was in perfect condition and I don't regret the purchase because I could read everything easy and there wasn't a single scratch on this book and it was cheaper than my over priced bookstore :D

As Stephen Sedley reminds us in the Foreword to the second edition of this book, judicial review of governmental acts and omissions didn't even feature in the Bar examinations in the 1960s!

Yet now, judicial review is `centre-stage in both legal theory and legal practice' -- and this is not the only distinctive aspect of judicial review. Another is the central and salient fact that in judicial review, it's the state that is usually one of the parties. Thus the purpose of judicial review, at least in theory, is to hold open the option for individuals to challenge the might of the state.

From the signing of Magna Carta in 1215 -- as the authors point out in the preface -- the common law has developed (not without struggle) to protect fundamental rights and freedoms. So it is curious that it's only within the last half century or so that judicial review has been formally instituted to uphold these rights.

Judicial review, then, is intended to ensure that decisions made by the state that affect the lives of individuals -- or groups --are both democratic and lawful. The stated aim of the expert authors of this Guide, recently published by Jordans, has therefore been to assist access to judicial review on the part of individuals and their advisers.

`We hope', they say, `that both experienced lawyers and litigants in person will be able to rely on this book to guide them through the process.'

The book is divided into four parts. The first - Law and Practice - guides the reader step by step though the complexities of the judicial review process, from initial instructions to appeals and ultimately, costs. As in many another legal process, costs are the caveat emptor and anyone contemplating a resort to judicial review should bear in mind the expense that is likely to ensue.

Parts II, III and IV offer respectively, a procedural checklist, forms and precedents (twenty in all) and finally, a guide to the relevant legislation and protocol.

The second edition cites a number of new developments in law and practice; developments in costs and funding being one of them. Other new material focuses on such issues as changes to appeals (CPR Part 52)... ongoing developments in case law... and new limitations in the context of immigration.

These of course are only a few examples. As one would expect, this reliable, concise and readable work of reference contains extensive tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and European and international material, plus a 17-page index at the back.

From students and academics, to experienced and inexperienced practitioners alike, anyone interested in this complex but fascinating subject -- or professionally involved in it -- should rush out and acquire this book as a matter of priority. The law is stated as at 1 January 2012.

Shocking Ending

When Jessica and her best friend, Ryan, are at Horrorland, they buy a two- headed coin at the Chiller's gift shop. Then, while walking home through school they take a short cut through a field. They flip the coin and enter into a medieval world.

Jessica and Ryan encounter a blacksmith, angry guards and a headless Prince. Can they escape the horror?

The fifteenth entry in the Horrorland series reminds me of one of my favorite Goosebumps: A Night in Terror Tower. The plot in Head, You Lose! is very lose, containing mainly of chase scenes in the medieval world. The book is still fun, with a shocking ending.

Excerpt from the Introduction: MOST of the ideas which permeate our social, religious, and political institutions of to-day arise from misconceptions of the human body. And as the influence of woman is vital, no advance could be made until the co-operation of woman was properly understood and insisted upon as essential to any ideal society, to any true realization of religion, to any perfect government. Active not passive aid is what I demanded from woman. She must be appreciated as the architect of the human race. Men are what their mothers make them. Their intelligence or ignorance has the power to teach them to revere or desecrate womanhood. Night after night throughout the United States I pleaded for the intellectual emancipation and the redemption of womanhood from sexual slavery--

Victoria Claflin Woodhull ( 1838 - 1927) was a feminist reformer, clairvoyant, stock broker, sex symbol and free-love advocate of the 19th century. As the better known Susan B. Anthony cast her vote in the 1872 presidential election, Woodhull was standing as a presidential candidate (the first woman to do so), but couldn't vote for herself since she was imprisoned on charges of indecency. On May 10, 1872 Woodhull became the first woman nominated for President of the United States.
