Universal's Monsters reign supreme...even with a few mistakes!

As the previous reader's posts have mentioned, this book is packed with excellent pictures from the universal archives. The articles are very interesting and insightful. HOWEVER, there are clearly SEVERAL mistakes in the book that any avid monster fan can spot. For instance, a picture's caption of Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein in "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man" states that it is Lon Chaney! A second caption on a picture reads " Gwen Conliffe and her Fiance "Glenn Talbot". Glenn Talbot? Not even a character in the film! Gwen's fiance was named Frank Andrews! Many other mistakes plague the book as well, such as when they quote Maria Ouspenskaya's Chilling epitath of the Doomed Larry Talbot, they state it as saying".....evil enters the sea"! What!! It's correct transcript should be "..as the rain enters the soil, the RIVER enters the sea"! This is an unexcusable mistake on a VERY famous quote! Another has a Mummy sequel as having music from "Son of Frankenstein" when it was music taken from "Frankenstein meets the wolf man" and/or "The Wolf Man! (the musical ques are very evident).and , Finally a mistake on page 123, the film "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man, states it as having ALL three monsters in it ( Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man). The film did NOT have Dracula in it. So the text itself has several mistakes that slightly tarnish an otherwise amazing book. I still reccomend it to all those who love the classic Universal monsters as i do, and at $19.99 it's a bargain!

True Monster fans look elsewhere

Rating a book is always subjective. It is based on what your expectations were, and if they were met. I grew up watching the Universal Studios monsters and have a fan's knowledge of who played which characters, some of the challenges they faced, and how playing the monsters impacted their lives. I have read and bought other books on the topic, and I bought this one due to the high ratings. I was disappointed, and had I seen this book in the bookstore I would never have bought it.

What I liked about the book:
1. It uses high quality paper and the layout is clear.
2. There are eight monster sections: Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

What I bought the book for, and did not like:
1. The photos in many cases appear to be copies of copies of copies. The photo of Frankenstein on pg 59 is very fuzzy. The Mummy on pg 105 is so fuzzy that it looks like it came from an old newspaper story. In the Wolfman section on pg 130 there is a photo of a victim's hand that again is fuzzy and dark. The quality of the photography throughout is mediocre to poor.
2. This darkness is another problem with the photos. There has been no attempt to "clean up" the photos to make them crisper or lighter. The book was written in 2006 and there was technology that could have been used to do so. Also, while some photos (like the pentagram on the victim's hand on pg 130) are interesting and fresh, many photos already appear online for free.
3. The last straw were the essays in the book.

The essay on the Phantom of the Opera was written by Lon Chaney's great grandson however, because he never met his great-grandfather, he basically restates what you can read anywhere else. The closest he comes to family insight is when he uses the phrase, "I've heard it said…" (pg 15) but he doesn't say if this was family lore, or if it came from the research he had to do to write this article.

Another disappointment was the article written by Bela Lugosi's son. He certainly does a better job introducing us to the man, not the actor, but it has been widely reported that toward the end of his life, Bela Lugosi had some serious mental issues, and none of this is addressed. The most he says is that he was "buried most fittingly in one of his Dracula capes" (pg 41). I appreciate loyalty, but there is a bigger-and more interesting-story to tell… how did Lugosi's psychosis affect his family? No, this shouldn't be a Jerry Springer-type expose, but it reads more like the cover-ups about stars that the studio system was famous for at the time these movies were originally made.

The last, and worst, essay (in my opinion) was written by Jessica Beals regarding her turn as "The Bride" because this has nothing to do with the subject of the book - the classic Universal Studios monsters. I found what she wrote to be interesting, however it is misplaced in this book.

This review may seem very harsh, and as I've stated throughout, I understand it is my opinion only. In writing this review I wanted to give a more complete picture to those people considering buying this book. For a used book it is not cheap, and I hope some of the concerns I've raised will help fans considering buying this book better understand what they will be getting for their money.

A Picture Is Worth More Than a Thousand Words

I will echo the feelings of other customer reviewers who point out that the photos are worth the price of admission...or at least are the primary reason for wanting this book. I, too, have been a Universal monster-film devotee since I was a kid and the Universal "Shock Theater" package was sold to local TV stations...in my case WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, where John Zacherle paraded as "Roland" every Friday and Saturday night, introducing these gems that are the subject of the current book.

The problem I have with the book, hence only two stars, is that the text is woefully inadequate -- and wrong in at least one instance. (Dracula was not in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN.) This is a very cursory introduction to the films, apparently aimed at those with only a casual or passing interest in the films. But then, why would such people spend this kind of money on a subject they don't hold near and dear to their hearts? The chapters by the likes of Sara Karloff (who has made a career out of remembering her father), Bela Lugosi, Jr., Lon Chaney's great-grandson, and so forth, are interesting. Some (like Jennifer Beals) seem somewhat self-promoting.

But the photos! These are wonderful. Many are the standard publicity photos that Forrest Ackerman used to publish in his Famous Monsters of Filmland. But there are dozens of others that I'd never seen before in the 50 years since I first fell in love with the Universal monsters.

In all, this is a worthwhile addition to my library, but I sure wish it had been done better, and not just as a "coffee table" book.

Unlike St. Augustine, Sade proposed a revolution in sexual morals to accompany the political revolution then taking place in France. Libido Dominandi – the term is taken from Book I of Augustine’s City of God – is the definitive history of that sexual revolution, from 1773 to the present.

Unlike the standard version of the sexual revolution, Libido Dominandi shows how sexual liberation was from its inception a form of control. Those who wished to liberate man from the moral order needed to impose social controls as soon as they succeeded because liberated libido led inevitably to anarchy. Aldous Huxley wrote in his preface to the 1946 edition of Brave New World that "as political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase." This book is about the converse of that statement. It explains how the rhetoric of sexual freedom was used to engineer a system of covert political and social control. Over the course of the two-hundred-year span covered by this book, the development of technologies of communication, reproduction, and psychic control – including psychotherapy, behaviorism, advertising, sensitivity training, pornography, and plain old blackmail – allowed the Enlightenment and its heirs to turn Augustine’s insight on its head and create masters out of men’s vices. Libido Dominandi is the story of how that happened.

Long before the infamous "Virginia Slims" ad campaign, Bernays used the suggestion that cigarette smoking was an act of feminist independence to sell Lucky Strikes to women. Here we see the origins of the Planned Parenthood organization in the hope that birth control and abortion would reduce the numbers of the poor (especially ethnic Catholics and blacks), and resolve the dilemma of the welfare state. Here we learn of the fraudulent methodology of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, the sordid character of much of his "research," and the way in which Kinsey manipulated his academic superiors and his chief sources of funding through an implicit threat of blackmail, because these people had been foolish enough to give him their "sexual histories." The r�le of the Rockefeller Foundation in both the Planned Parenthood and Kinsey enterprises was motivated by the obsaession of John D. Rockefeller III with eugenics, the pseudo-science of "race improvement." We learn also of the profound antipathy of the eugenicists and sex researchers towards Roman Catholicism, which they viewed as their principal adversary. Jones exposes the origins of "Americans United for the Separation of Church and State" in the anti-Catholic bigotry of Paul Blanshard. The organizations described here present a fa�ade of respectability to the public that would not be so easy for them to maintain if their backgrounds were better publicized.
Jones's case would be more persuasive had this book come under a firmer editorial hand. It is lengthy, but also repetitive. Some material is duplicated almost verbatim in several parts of the book; also, Jones repeats, again almost verbatim, material from his other books, "Dionysos Rising," "Decadent Moderns," and "Monsters from the Id." This book might have been cut to half its length with as good or better effect than it now has. The work also fails in its efforts to tie the all-too-genuine mischief wrought by the sexual revolution together as the result of some sort of "Illuminist" conspiracy. Jones is a Roman Catholic polemicist of the old-fashioned type, for whom no Roman prelate (at least before Vatican II) ever did wrong, and no Protestant ever did right. He writes with the vehemence of a pamphleteer in the time of the sixteenth-century French wars of religion, and would probably have been perfectly happy under the patronage of the third duke of Guise. While many conservative Catholics, his intended audience, will be undisturbed by this tone, it is likely to put off many others who might otherwise be interested in Jones's factual reportage and sympathetic to his conclusions. This is unfortunate, since both deserve to be more widely known.

The abolition of slavery was not originally a tenet of Lincoln’s political religion. He affirmed almost to the end of his life that the preservation of the Union was more important than ending slavery. This attitude was consistent with his judgment that at the founding, the agreement to incorporate slaveholding into the Constitution, and thus secure a Constitution, was more vital to the cause of equality than struggling to keep slavery out of the new nation. In Kateb’s reading, Lincoln destroys the Constitution twice, by suspending it as a wartime measure and then by enacting the Thirteenth Amendment to abolish slavery. The first instance was an effort to save the Constitution; the second was an effort to transform it, by making it answer the Declaration’s promises of equality.

The man who emerges in Kateb’s account proves himself adequate to the most terrible political situation in American history. Lincoln’s political life, however, illustrates the unsettling truth that in democratic politics―perhaps in all politics―it is nearly impossible to do the right thing for the right reasons, honestly stated.

A penetrating and nuanced evaluation of Lincoln's political thought

This is a penetrating and nuanced evaluation of Lincoln's political thought. Kateb acknowledges Lincoln's intellect and political skills -- he believes Lincoln was probably the only person alive at the time who could have both saved the Union and freed the slaves -- but his is not an uncritical analysis; Kateb is sympathetic, but no cheerleader. Kateb's writing is both spare and elegant. This is a thin volume with many deep insights.

Masterful

A powerful performance by a thinker of the utmost moral seriousness -- Kateb. To read this book is to listen to Kateb's voice in the lecture room, as I did long ago: acutely perceptive, morally freighted, and just slightly overwrought. The thoughts pass from Kateb's pen on to the page like worry beads. Kateb's analysis of the Second Inaugural Address is by itself worth the price of admission. Not an easy read, but richly stimulating. Highly recommended!

Nuanced About Lincoln And Open About Its Biases

Given the wide variety of material about Abraham Lincoln, much of it highly variable in terms of its approaches and points of view, often what someone writes about Abraham Lincoln tells one more about the writer than about Lincoln himself. As this author says wisely, Lincoln was hard to pin down in terms of what he actually thought and felt in his largely political writings, largely because he did not want to be pinned down. His political speeches, many of which have endured because they make for thoughtful and deeply reflective writings worthy of careful textual analysis, are full of layers and complications and can be at times difficult to understand in their full contexts. Perhaps surprisingly, given the critical attitude the author takes towards Lincoln’s behavior as a president in terms of the precedents he set for later presidents like Wilson and others, and in his belief that Lincoln should have been an abolitionist, despite the fact that no thorough abolitionist politician could have been elected President of the United States, and therefore rid our republic of the stain of slavery, the author believes that Abraham Lincoln is the only man who could have been elected president who would have freed the slaves as early as he did. This leads to an ironic conclusion that even though the author is apparently a thoroughgoing secularist without any sort of religious beliefs, his argument reinforces Lincoln’s own occasional beliefs in the providential nature of his life and work, and even his martyrdom on behalf of freedom.

In terms of its structure, this book is organized in a thematic fashion, taking various speeches and private fragments as the relevant Lincoln canon for his political philosophy, and then using these texts to discuss a few related matters over the course of just over 200 pages of thoughtful material. The book contains seven chapters roughly equal in length, starting with the period of Lincoln, between 1854 and 1865 (the second act of his political career, although it does look back to earlier speeches like his Lyceum address and Sub-Treasury speech from his early political career). The author then examines Lincoln as a writer, Lincoln’s political religion of human equality, with which the author largely approves, even with the accusation of mild racism, and Lincoln’s views on race and human equality. The book then shifts gears and looks at Lincoln and the Constitution, as well as Lincoln’s doctrine of military necessity in the Civil War, and Lincoln’s world outlook. As a whole, the author appears to lament the suspension of various rights and privileges during the Civil War even if he agrees that Lincoln suspended those rights as mildly as possible given his fierce commitment to the Union, with the benefit of hindsight in our own erosion of freedom over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Despite the fact that the book praises Lincoln in sometimes glowing terms, it often has what may be considered a strongly ambivalent approach towards Abraham Lincoln, and also it tends to overstate the level of color blindness in the Declaration of Independence while it simultaneously understates the genuine, if feeble, feeling against slavery that was present during the revolutionary period. This tendency to misrepresent American history, it should be noted, was largely due to what appears to be a hostility to the views of Jaffa (and also Fahrenbacher) that the crisis of the early American republic was due to the fact that a slaveholding people based their republic on the universal principle of the equality of all mankind with regards to the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (which may be seen as property, if one reads Locke and other related political philosophers), and this misrepresentation of the ethical standing of the American founding is done largely through taking Taney’s comments about the American view of blacks during the time of the Revolution and in 1857 at face value, which is unwise to do given the fact that Taney was not an honest historian in his Dred Scott decision. The abolitionism of the author tends to give much of this book’s content a certain strong feeling of self-righteousness that does not properly square with our own contemporary and widespread denial of the right to life for the innocent unborn that is at least as hypocritical as the denial of liberty to blacks during the antebellum period. Let him without sin cast the first stone. Overall, this book still manages to tell a lot about Abraham Lincoln, and also a lot about the author as well, including the fact that all generations are caught in the grip of deep tensions and contradictions that are not recognized at the time, and the fact that practical statesmanship, no matter how enlightened, often requires misdirection and even outright deception. Such is the price of attempting to lead virtuously as imperfect people in a fallen world.

Move over Jackal, here comes Pilgrim?

This is definitely the best covert ops/terrorism/murder book I have read this year. Whether it gets into my top 10 best thrillers depends on how long it remains in my memory. There is a lot to remember in a complex 700 page book that left me with so many impressions - intelligent and clever, superbly and deeply plotted, brilliant characterisation, ambitious, enthralling, page-turning, action-packed and mostly unpredictable.

Pilgrim is the codename chosen by a man who doesn't want to exist. An adopted son of a wealthy family he has always been a loner and after college becomes part of an unknown covert US government group. After becoming the star operator in the group in an operation in Russia he goes into anonymous retirement and writes an obscure book under a pseudonym about the forensic background to the perfect crime. Can anyone commit the perfect crime using this information?

On the other side of the world in Saudi Arabia another youth grows up in a world where his father is beheaded for being reported to the secret police for criticising the King. This leads him into a life dedicated to Islam but also a life dedicated to eliminating the US, the country who supports the Saudi regime and fights his fundamentalist Islamic ideals. This is the birth of a terrorist called Saracen, a loner with long term plans to change the world.

Hayes takes us on an epic and unpredictable journey by Pilgrim to solve a perfect crime and at the same time find Saracen before he can deliver a far greater blow to the US than a nuclear holocaust. The action moves from the US to Afghanistan, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and Turkey in a maze of seemingly unconnected events and builds up to a potentially cataclysmic ending.

Along the way Terry Hayes sows seeds that grow in unexpected parts of the plot. Sometimes I spotted the seeds but rarely worked out where they would grow. This cleverly designed unpredictability was to me the keystone of Haye's writing powers. At the end of the book he reflects that he had been told that writing a movie is like swimming in a bath and writing a novel is like swimming in the ocean. With his writing skills I think that Hayes would have no difficulty swimming across the (literary) Channel.

Terry Hayes has had a remarkable writing career as a journalist, and TV and movie screenwriter in Australia and the US and this novel is the start of what could become an important career as a novelist. Dame Gail Rebuck, CBE (Chair of Penguin Random House) has reportedly called it "The best debut thriller since Day of the Jackal". I am inclined to agree.

A Good, But Flawed Debut Novel By A Potentially Top-Notch Thriller Writer!

I won't provide a summary of the plot in my review as this can be obtained in the Book Description on Amazon, Goodreads, etc. I'll just say that what starts off as a very challenging murder investigation turns into a break-neck race against time by the former head of a secret US government organization to try to stop a terrorist attack that could bring the US to the brink of disaster. To say more than this runs the risk of providing spoilers or, at a minimum, to potentially detract from your ability to find out for yourself what occurs in the book.

After reading the first 100 or so pages of the 624-page Kindle edition of I Am Pilgrim, I was sure that this book was on its way to receiving a 5-star rating from me. However, the next 400 or so pages were so descriptive of every move and thought by the "good guy" and the "bad guy" with little action and thrills occurring on these pages that I often found myself just "eyeballing" many pages, with the hope that the book's pace would fulfill my ingoing expectations for an action-packed thriller. A more secondary issue I had with this book is that, while it was very descriptive of many elements pertaining to the main characters' behaviors and attitudes, it did not provide me with a strong enough sense of what they LOOKED like so that I could form a picture of them in my mind. As such, they came off as sort of "faceless" people to me.

Ultimately, my expectations were fulfilled in the last 75 pages or so -- and I Am Pilgrim fulfilled my expectations during these pages in a BIG way! I found that I couldn't turn these last pages fast enough to find out how the book ended. As a result of its final pages, my overall rating which I initially thought was going to be 5-stars, and then dropped to what I thought would be no more than a 3-star ("It was okay") rating, wound up earning a 4-star ("I liked it") rating overall.

If you think this "up and down ride" with I Am Pilgrim would be a problem for you, than I suggest you definitely save your time and money and read something else. However, if you think that its exciting conclusion would override the flaws mentioned above, than I think I Am Thriller is one you'd enjoy. And, if the latter is the case, I think you'll agree with me that first-time novelist, Terry Hayes, has the potential to eventually become a top-notch thriller writer. I, for you, will be looking forward to reading his next book, which I expect will feature the same main character.

Brilliantly conceived battle of two Titans

An extremely literate story about a battle between two titans of their respective sides. One is an American, adopted son of a family with a great deal of privilege, currently an agent for a U.S. government agency only depicted as higher than the CIA. The other is a poor Arab boy born in Saudi Arabia but turned into a terrorist by the Saudi's execution of his father for no apparent reason. The American uses the name of Pilgrim in order to hide his real identity and has become one of the most effective agents his agency has. The Arab is turned onto terrorism by the Saudi's execution of his father just because the man spoke badly of the king. He decides that revenge against Saudi Arabia would be best served by a massive terrorist attack on the United States, which he deems the Saudi's ally. He proceeds to buildup a well prepared background becoming known as the Saracen in order to effect this attack.
Hayes is brilliant in developing the two characters, their motivations, their reactions to each other as mortal enemies. The reader knows each one intimately through the author's descriptions and can relate to their actions on an ongoing basis. What the Saracen decides to use to attack the United States demands a preparation that only a very bright mind could conceive of and work towards. It is a credible threat that the reader will be able to identify as possible. Pilgrim's planning and actions against this enemy must be even more clever in order to win the mental battle between them.
The action moves back and forth starting with a murder investigation in New York and ending in Turkey.
Hayes, in an afterward, indicates that film rights are in process and I would certainly be a fan of that if it comes out. In the meanwhile I do trust that the author is planning more books for the near future, and those I will grab as soon as available.

National Board Certified Physics Teacher Loves It

This book is an outstanding study tool for students enrolled in college preparatory physics courses or AP Physics B courses. I have found it an EXTREMELY valuable starting point for my own quizzes and tests. The questions seem to be the perfect balance between conceptual and computational assessments. I use the books in this series as the ideal curricular standard for the courses described above. Highest praise for the authors.

Tremendous help

This volume was a tremendous help for a child I know who graduated from a New York state high school in the last two years. The physics teacher assigned did a lousy job explaining the ins and outs of the physics examination for the N.Y. State Regents board. This book, however, helped the high school student earn well above average on the results. Nice book.

In defenbce of a great book

I post this to indicate to those browseing at a glance that this is indeed a 5 Star rated book!

As an arbitrator with 15+ years experience I bought this book a few years back to ensure I was following correct procedure and that my views were aligned with a recognised expert. I frequently dip in and out for guidence and would recommend the book to both experienced arbitrators and those setting out on their careers. A great book and a definite buy.

Maybe an article but surely not a book. Repetitiously redundant and uniquely focused on English & Welsh law. Says the same thing in 6-8 different places.
