About the Author

Rael Isacowitz is a world-renowned practitioner and teacher of Pilates. With over three decades of Pilates practice and achievement, he is a prominent lecturer and teacher at symposia, universities, colleges, and studios around the globe. He received his bachelor of education degree and teaching credentials from Israel's prestigious Wingate Institute, where he subsequently joined the teaching faculty. He later earned a master of arts degree in dance from the University of Surrey, England.

Rael’s early Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman and thereafter several of the first-generation Pilates teachers (known as the Elders), including Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry, and Lolita San Miguel.

Rael has mastered all levels of the Pilates repertoire and is noted in the industry for his unique athleticism; synthesis of body, mind, and spirit; and passion for teaching. In 1989 he founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Pilates, which has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. BASI Pilates is currently taught in more than 100 locations spanning 30 countries.

Rael’s first edition of Pilates (Human Kinetics, 2006) and his Pilates Anatomy (coauthored with Karen Clippinger, Human Kinetics, 2011) have received worldwide acclaim and been translated into multiple languages. He has published a series of movement analysis workbooks on all the Pilates apparatus, produced DVDs, designed the revolutionary Avalon System line of contemporary equipment, and created the groundbreaking Pilates Interactive software. About the Author
John Kay is a visiting Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, a Fellow of St John's College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a member of the Scottish Government's Council of Economic Advisers. He is a director of several public companies and contributes a weekly column to the Financial Times. Good Introduction To Orbital Mechanics

In the preface to this book, Francis Hale explains that this text was written for a long-running one semester course in space flight at North Carolina State University. He also mentioned that the class was open to all students from all backgrounds and though calculus was not required for the course, it would help. I'll say so. I had quite a bit of calculus in college (although that was several years ago), and while I could generally follow the discussions in this text, some of the mathematical assumptions and thought processes were at times difficult for me to work through.

The point to be made about this book is that while it is ostensibly an introduction to space flight, do not be fooled into thinking that it is casual reading: it is very rewarding reading, but is not easy. The text is very lucid, well thought out, and thorough; while the mathematical reasoning is generally logical, some assumptions are made that are not always evident to non engineers.

Most people reading this book will be engineers with a recent college math background, and it is a perfect book for that audience. I enjoyed reading the book as well, but had to take my time with the mathematical reasoning fairly routinely. I give the book four stars because while perfect for collegiate engineering students, it really is a bit in depth for a more casual reader with a less rigorous mathematical background. For narrative excellence, though, the text can't be beat. Recommended to any interested engineers or to any interested party with exposure to (at a minimum) calculus of a single variable, although this book is not particularly suitable for armchair space enthusiasts.

Hundreds of Character Sketches As We Look at People Looking at Art, With Jokes

The Louvre has copublished at least a half-dozen graphic novels that feature the Louvre as interpreted by different independent artists. The ones I've read range from pretty awful, (DeCrecy's "Glacial Period" is a rework of "Planet of the Apes" with the ice covered Louvre subbing in for the Statue of Liberty), to mildly charming, (in Durieux's "An Enchantment" a vaguely bored retiring museum director wanders the Louvre pursuing a Muse).

But here, in "Cruising Through the Louvre" they get it just right. Both the story approach and the drawing are quite satisfying.

The story is clever. Our artist wanders the Louvre mulling over what sort of Louvre book he's going to draw. That's simple enough; there's no dialogue; there's minimal internal monologue. But, we get a real sense of the artist, his life, and the challenge he faces. Nothing heavy or profound, but remarkably engaging and self-effacing, which is the exact opposite of what one expects.

And the drawing is loaded with amusements and jokes. Hundreds and hundreds of character sketches as the artist basically watches people look at the art. The range of characters is varied and diverse. Lots of visual jokes about people adopting the same positions as the objects they are contemplating. Jokes about how people interact with art. A clever set of drawings showing what Mona Lisa sees as she looks out at the tourists looking at her. And all of this is done with understated charm and great technique and restraint.

So, while it would be possible to dismiss this as just a long, clever Louvre souvenir book, it is actually quite accomplished and entertaining, and loaded with style and humor. A nice find.

Journey though art galleries and their inhabitants

Instead of a story centered on the many works of art the Louvre museum contains, Prudhomme focuses here on those who come to see it.

The pages appear to be reproduced from pencils, giving everything a smudgy look, without strong definition between the viewers and the art viewed. That’s part of his point, but stylistically, the eye doesn’t have many resting points, blurring elements together. I also didn’t care for the opening, where the artist has a cell-phone conversation about the progress of his book. (Later, he acknowledges that in real life, taking phone calls in the museum is against the rules.) Like hearing someone in a real museum, I found it a self-centered distraction.

Some individual images are interesting, particularly in juxtaposition between life and art — a teacher surrounded by kids in front of a picture of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels, a striking woman viewing the Mona Lisa — but I found the people too often appearing insubstantial. It’s hard to make out details at times. I expect a book like this to make me want to visit the museum, and Cruising Through the Louvre was surprisingly ineffective in this regard. This is a better memento, after visiting the Louvre, than an invitation.

“You can drown yourself quickly here,” says our narrator. That’s true, particularly as so much of the book is a grey wash, sweeping over without drawing the reader into the images. (The publisher provided a review copy. Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

About the Author
Joseph D. Ritco has been an international educator for almost two decades. He has held various administrative positions in small- to medium-sized overseas schools. Mr. Ritco received his BA degree (1990) and teacher training certification (1991) from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, after which he was a graduate student of history (1992-1994) at McGill University, Quebec. Mr. Ritco then obtained his online teaching English as a foreign language certificate (2003) from the London Teacher Training Centre, England; his online M.Ed. (2011) in educational leadership from Northcentral University, Arizona; and his executive leadership certificate (2011) and human resources director's certificate (2011) from eCornell, Cornell University, New York. Mr. Ritco is a member in good standing with the British Columbia Teacher Regulation Branch, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Virginia. Mr. Ritco has authored a number of articles pertaining to English-language instruction and best practices.

Written by a seasoned educator well versed in leadership within educational settings, Joseph D. Ritco has an extensive understanding of what it takes to enhance the learning experience and cultivate success as a leading, international educator. Implementing Transformational Leadership in International Schools effectively demonstrates the need for PK-12 international school administrators to embrace and employ a multi-dimensional, transformative, educational strategy.

Transformational leadership is a process in which leaders take actions to increase awareness regarding what is right and important. The author states that: “Ideally, transformational international school administrators should employ a combination of objective and subjective methods when selecting and hiring staff members.” Further impressing the reason “…is because there are too many abstract personal factors that must also be considered in relation to how the applicant will fit into and complement or enhance the climate and culture of an overseas school.”

Keeping top educators motivated requires more than just a salary. It requires the willingness to find original and upbeat ways to engage their creativity and maximize effectiveness. For example, continuously stimulating and engaging such a group may require them to become more active in roles where a higher-level of leadership is required; roles such as coaching, mentoring, or other positions of authority. In relation to international schools, the author illustrates that educators within an international setting will experience more “flux” than those in their native countries. This proves to be a positive as becoming familiar with new cultures paves the way for more personal growth and expansion; thus benefiting the overall atmosphere. However, they must be properly accommodated by salary and the opportunity to lead.

Working in his garden one day, Michael Pollan hit pay dirt in the form of an idea: do plants, he wondered, use humans as much as we use them? While the question is not entirely original, the way Pollan examines this complex coevolution by looking at the natural world from the perspective of plants is unique. The result is a fascinating and engaging look at the true nature of domestication.

In making his point, Pollan focuses on the relationship between humans and four specific plants: apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatoes. He uses the history of John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) to illustrate how both the apple's sweetness and its role in the production of alcoholic cider made it appealing to settlers moving west, thus greatly expanding the plant's range. He also explains how human manipulation of the plant has weakened it, so that "modern apples require more pesticide than any other food crop." The tulipomania of 17th-century Holland is a backdrop for his examination of the role the tulip's beauty played in wildly influencing human behavior to both the benefit and detriment of the plant (the markings that made the tulip so attractive to the Dutch were actually caused by a virus). His excellent discussion of the potato combines a history of the plant with a prime example of how biotechnology is changing our relationship to nature. As part of his research, Pollan visited the Monsanto company headquarters and planted some of their NewLeaf brand potatoes in his garden--seeds that had been genetically engineered to produce their own insecticide. Though they worked as advertised, he made some startling discoveries, primarily that the NewLeaf plants themselves are registered as a pesticide by the EPA and that federal law prohibits anyone from reaping more than one crop per seed packet. And in a interesting aside, he explains how a global desire for consistently perfect French fries contributes to both damaging monoculture and the genetic engineering necessary to support it.

Pollan has read widely on the subject and elegantly combines literary, historical, philosophical, and scientific references with engaging anecdotes, giving readers much to ponder while weeding their gardens. --Shawn Carkonen

Pollan preaches a unique sort of romantic environmentalism where humans and plants satisfy each other's desires for survival, enjoyment, satisfaction and escape. He uses the apple, tulip, Cannabis and potato to develop his ideas, offering the histories of each and how they developed reciprocal relationships with the humans with whom each interacted. Scott Brick exudes excitement and breathes life into the recording—the timbre of his voice offering just the right touch of humor and depth. Listeners will feel like Brick truly loves the book and loves reading it aloud. It's a great combination for listeners: interesting subject, great writing and wonderful reading. Plants are important to us for many reasons. Pollan, an editor and contributor to Harper's and the New York Times Magazine and author of Second Nature: A Gardener's Education, muses on our complex relationships with them, using the examples of the apple, the tulip, the marijuana plant, and the potato. He weaves disparate threads from personal, scientific, literary, historical, and philosophical sources into an intriguing and somehow coherent narrative. Thus, he portrays Johnny Appleseed as an important force in adapting apple trees to a foreign climate but also a Dionysian figure purveying alcohol to settlers; tulips as ideals of beauty that brought about disaster to a Turkish sultan and Dutch investors; marijuana as a much desired drug related to a natural brain chemical that helps us forget as well as a bonanza for scientific cultivators; and the potato, a crop once vilified as un-Christian, as the cause of the Irish famine and finally an example of the dangers of modern chemical-intense, genetically modified agriculture. These essays will appeal to those with a wide range of interests. Recommended for all types of libraries. This is not just a botany book. It is a food book and book about money, about drugs and it's a mystical experience all in one!

This is my all-time favorite plant book, even though it concerns only four plants: apples, tulips, potatoes and of all things, marijuana.Nevertheless, the details that author Pollan shares with the reader about these four plants and their histories is both fascinating and indispensable knowledge for anyone even slightly interested in botany. And i must say that if you so much as eat apples or potatoes ( read: french fries?) or enjoy spring tulips or happened to ever have savored MaryJanes aroma, whether you "inhaled" or not, you will find something in this book that will rivet your attention. Just for an example, take Johnny Appleseed spreading those millions of apple trees. Who knew that those apples that came from those trees would never be fit for eating, because as Pollan tells us, apples don't come true from seed. Thus his conclusion is that Johnny Appleseed spread apples for one purpose only: the making of hard apple cider, which was the drink of choice in early America!

This is only one amazing tidbit from The Botany of Desire but it was such a great read and so jam-packed with information that i literally read it five times over the years since its publication. I highly recommend it to everyone.

A story of four plants and four human motivations, Pollan draws them together with wit. I consumed this book in a short time, taking to work to read in my spare moments. I don't often get wrapped up so deeply in books, but this one grabbed me. There are source citations for a great many of his assertions, which was also fantastic. If you are interested in evolution, plants, human nature, marijuana, flowers, industrial food, organic gardening; there will be something to carry you through this story and speak to your interest. The writing is engaging and flows with ease from one subject to the next. It refers back to previous chapters and thoughts expressed, without wandering aimlessly in thought.

A great little read that will provoke thought and discussion. It will leave you wanting more.

Finished the book, then bought it

The Botany of Desire, A Plant’s-Eye View of the World by Michael Pollan (270 pages)

I borrowed this book and, after reading it, decided I needed to buy a copy, as it's a book I want to keep and have available to loan out. Environmental journalist Michael Pollan explores the relationship between humans and plants – coevolution. He presents intriguing chapters on desires:
• Sweetness -- the apple (Johnny Appleseed and the evolution of the apple to today’s highly domesticated fruit);
• Beauty -- the tulip (Bred to the Turks’ idea of beauty, the tulip took over and transformed Holland);
• Intoxication -- Marijuana (altered to satisfy human desires for intoxication, the marijuana plant has been bred to avoid detection. Small female clones are grown inside, under controlled conditions);
• Control --the potato (Why the Potato Famine caused devastation in Ireland and dangers of genetic engineered Monsato’s NewLeafs. The NewLeafs are resistant to blight. The danger is that potato diseases resistant to today’s chemicals will develop).
