At the turn of the 19th century, the State of Georgia was expanding rapidly by acquiring more land to accommodate the influx of new settlers. The United States government entered into several treaties with the Creek Indian Nation to officially lay claim to the land the Indians had inhabited for hundreds of years. With each new treaty, Georgia's western boundary - and the southwestern boundary of the United States - expanded westward to the next river. From 1805 until 1821, the Ocmulgee River was the dividing line between two contrasting worlds, creating one of the most remarkable environments in American history. On the eastern banks of the Ocmulgee River was the State of Georgia with its highly developed civilization of farms, log cabins, and a network of dirt roads built by enterprising white settlers. On the western side of the Ocmulgee River was the vast expanse of Indian Territory occupied by the Creek Indians with their primitive way of life. For a period of sixteen years, white settlers and Creek Indians shared the great river, both depending on it for food, transportation, and commerce. The white man and red man coexisted on the Ocmulgee River until the Treaty at Indian Springs in 1821 took the Indians' ancient homeland and began a process that led to the removal of all southern Indians known as the Trail of Tears. This book is a fictional story of two adventurous pioneers who received lots in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery and established the first settlement on the Ocmulgee River bordering the Creek Indian Nation. Based on historical facts, the story takes place at Hartford, GA which was a thriving town and important trading center for Indians and whites on the Ocmulgee River. The white settlers operated a trading post on the frontier and participated in the incredible events that shaped the State of Georgia and our young nation following the American Revolution.

Studying his genealogy made the history of Georgia come alive with incredible characters, places, and events. As Ray put the pieces together one generation after another, a story emerged about the brave pioneers that first settled the Georgia frontier and the social and political forces that shaped their lives.

A wonderful tail that makes pioneer Georgia history come alive!
By John Trussell
The author, Ray Scarborough, raised in Perry ,Georgia, spend many years studying both his own family background and Georgia pioneer history before he tackled this outstanding novel. Although fictional, the author weaves a intriguing tail of a young man's dream of starting a new life on the frontier of Georgia once he wins a land lot in the draw of 1805. He and his best friend, Edward Beckham, trade their land lots for a piece of land that borders the Ocmulgee River and establish the first Trading post, called Traders Bluff, in the area. With their unique insights and knowledge of the wilderness and local Indians, they soon rub shoulders with General Benjamin Hawkins and General Andrew Jackson, the two historical giants of the time. Other important figures, such as Timothy Barnard, Nancy Hart,General David Blackshear, Indian Chief Menawa and many others are woven into the story in an entertaining style. Over a brief period of time, Traders Bluff was renamed Hartford and with the Indian Springs Treaty of 1821, pioneers rushed into new lands across the Ocmulgee River and the city Hawkinsville was formed. Then Hartford faded into memory, but it was an important building block for Georgia's future. Reading this book is fun way to learn important Georgia history and to complement this book, try checking these two books out of the local library, as both are out of print. One is "Wilderness Still the Cradle of Nature: Frontier Georgia" by Edward Cashin and the other, "Pioneer Days Along the Ocmulgee" By Russell Chalker. These two books will give you a greater appreciation of "The Trading Post"since Scarborough had to weave important historical material into the plot. Overall, this is a very well written and historically correct book, even through the narrative is fictional. Over time ,I believe that Scarborough's book, " The Trading Post" will earn its place as a top novel of life along the early Georgia frontier and I highly recommend this book!

John McBride - President of the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society
By John C McBride
As a boy I often wondered what it would have been like to be one of the first settlers into the interior part of Georgia. Through this fictional book built around true historical research, I feel like I have now had the chance to live that experience. Ray Scarborough does an excellent job of letting you relive the excitement and unknowns of first moving into a new land as a boy and growing into a man as the area transitions from a true frontier into the early state of Georgia. The reader's eyes are opened to a better understanding of the relationship between the Native Americans and the new settlers that are slowly taking over their ancient lands. From both a historical and a human prospective, this book is truly great read.
