About the Author
Dr Tey Hong Liang passed the examinations for the membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), Graduate Diploma in Geriatric Medicine (Singapore), and the United States Medical Licensing Examinations in 2006, and completed his Advanced Specialist Training in Dermatology at the National Skin Centre (Singapore) in 2009.
Dr Erle Lim obtained his Master's degree in Medicine (Internal Medicine) in 1997 and has been mentoring candidates through the MRCP, M Med (Int Med) and MBBS, ever since. He was accredited in neurology in 2000 and now sits on the specialist training committee for neurology in Singapore. He completed his fellowship in movement disorders at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and is now a tenured associate professor of medicine at the National University of Singapore, where he also serves as an assistant dean of education (clinical, admissions and student affairs). He was awarded the faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2005/6 and 2006/7, the university's annual Teaching Excellence Award in 2006/7 and the Outstanding Educator Award in 2008. He is also currently a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK).

Amazing book on clinical examination

There are so many books on clinical examination. Yet a large number of published studies repeatedly show that medical residents and fellow suck at clinical examination. If one quickly browse through several copies of the currently available standard text books on clinical examination, it is not hard to see that they simply cut and paste each other's material. A good example will be many of the classic signs of aortic regurgitations that appeared repeatedly in many textbooks. A recent study (Babu 2003 Ann Intern Med) show that most of these signs had no evidence base at all. Yet, most authors just mindlessly copy them from one edition to another. It is not surprise that students and resident just mindlessly repeat the laundry list of task memorised from some of these textbook. It is bad medicine, not to mention that it makes the process of learning medicine a disheartening experience.
This new book on clinical examination by Lim and Liang is different from all the previous books. It explains things...just that simple. It gives a reasonable, sensible and coherent account of why you should elicit certain signs and how it is going to help you work out the diagnosis. A good example will be its chapter on Neurological Examination. Surprisingly, this chapter is better than all the other neurological textbooks I read (and the authors are not even neurologists!). It also has a large number of diagrams and tables. Again, they are not just another laundry list of mindless differential diagnoses. Instead, the tables make sense and it makes the task of committing them to memory far less painful.
This book is fantastic and it really makes the process of learning medicine a lot more rewarding and pleasant.

CONCISE AND THOROUGH

The book not only gives step by step instructions on how to carry out patient examination but explains the significance of each relevant finding. Its a great book to have especially with so many newer book editions being condensed and leaving out details like patient position and maneuvers.Great for residents and medical students.
