About the Author
Joseph D. Ritco has been an international educator for almost two decades. He has held various administrative positions in small- to medium-sized overseas schools. Mr. Ritco received his BA degree (1990) and teacher training certification (1991) from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, after which he was a graduate student of history (1992-1994) at McGill University, Quebec. Mr. Ritco then obtained his online teaching English as a foreign language certificate (2003) from the London Teacher Training Centre, England; his online M.Ed. (2011) in educational leadership from Northcentral University, Arizona; and his executive leadership certificate (2011) and human resources director's certificate (2011) from eCornell, Cornell University, New York. Mr. Ritco is a member in good standing with the British Columbia Teacher Regulation Branch, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Virginia. Mr. Ritco has authored a number of articles pertaining to English-language instruction and best practices.

Written by a seasoned educator well versed in leadership within educational settings, Joseph D. Ritco has an extensive understanding of what it takes to enhance the learning experience and cultivate success as a leading, international educator. Implementing Transformational Leadership in International Schools effectively demonstrates the need for PK-12 international school administrators to embrace and employ a multi-dimensional, transformative, educational strategy.

Transformational leadership is a process in which leaders take actions to increase awareness regarding what is right and important. The author states that: “Ideally, transformational international school administrators should employ a combination of objective and subjective methods when selecting and hiring staff members.” Further impressing the reason “…is because there are too many abstract personal factors that must also be considered in relation to how the applicant will fit into and complement or enhance the climate and culture of an overseas school.”

Keeping top educators motivated requires more than just a salary. It requires the willingness to find original and upbeat ways to engage their creativity and maximize effectiveness. For example, continuously stimulating and engaging such a group may require them to become more active in roles where a higher-level of leadership is required; roles such as coaching, mentoring, or other positions of authority. In relation to international schools, the author illustrates that educators within an international setting will experience more “flux” than those in their native countries. This proves to be a positive as becoming familiar with new cultures paves the way for more personal growth and expansion; thus benefiting the overall atmosphere.
